The MSED Curriculum

Students may take the MSED program with a focus on curriculum, Instruction, Reading and special education. All programs require the completion of three components for a minimum of 32 semester hours of credit. The three components of the program include: core courses, electives and culminating research experience.
Program options include the following concentrations:
- Curriculum and Instruction
- Curriculum and Instruction with Reading Endorsement
- Special Education (Mild to Moderate Intervention Specialist)
- Special Education (Mild to Moderate Intervention Specialist) with licensure
All graduate students seeking the reading endorsement or the special education licensure, must have a valid licensure and be seeking to add these credentials to their present licensure areas.

Please note the following:
- The reading endorsement program is being phased out in its present structure. As the Ohio Department of Education changes the licensure requirements, Lake Erie College will not accept any new graduate students into the reading endorsement part of the MSED until new regulations and requirements are decided upon and until Lake Erie College is approved for new reading licensure.
- The new special education program is subject to final approvals from the Ohio Board of Regents, the Ohio Department of Education and the Council for Exceptional Children.

Special Programs
Students desiring to achieve their MSED degree with special options that includes coursework in their teaching areas may work with their advisors to petition the Education Faculty Committee. Their petitions should include lists of specific graduate courses they wish to apply to the degree, source of the coursework, original transcripts and other information as needed. The core requirements of the Lake Erie College MSED program must be met along with all other requirements. The advisor will present the program to the Education Faculty Committee for approval.
Off Campus Cohort Programs Lake Erie College offers graduate programs off campus for districts or groups that request them and can provide a specified number of students who are willing to work together as a cohort group. Groups must agree to stay together and take the same courses. Usually there is a reduced rate for these groups. Should a student drop out and need to take coursework on campus to compensate for the missed semester, that student will be charged the regular rate for the missed course. Should the group attrition reach a point where it is no longer economically feasible to continue off campus, the group will be asked to complete coursework on campus.
Graduation Requirements
- complete the specific course requirements of the MSED program
- earn a minimum grade point average of 3.00
- complete all requirements for the MSED program within 10 years of the first course in the program
- culminate the graduate program by successfully completing one of the following research project options:
Option One
Prepare and present to a faculty committee, a professional, research-based portfolio validating the student’s application of the strand of the Lake Erie College Education Division conceptual framework. A professional portfolio is an evolving collection of carefully selected or composed professional thoughts, goals and experiences that are threaded with reflection and self-assessment; it provides authentic evidence of a teacher’s work and is a vehicle for fostering reflection on the art and practice of teaching. As is characteristic of research, a review of literature must be included.
Option Two
Prepare and present to a faculty committee documentation of a completed applied research project. Applied research is conducted chiefly in order to improve educational practice by solving some sort of specific problem. It must address one or more components of the Conceptual Framework and Ohio’s Content Standards. Attempts at applying learning theory to solve practical problems that teachers face in the classroom are examples of this type of research.
Option Three
Prepare and present to a faculty committee documentation of a completed action research project. Action research is one type of applied research; it addresses a specific classroom and/or school-based problem. It must be related to a school’s School Improvement Plan, the conceptual
framework and Ohio’s Content Standards. Educational leaders conduct action research in order to address a problem by using principles and methodologies or research.
Research Project
Guidelines for the written project will be provided in EDM 500, Research for the Professional Educator. A proposal, developed in EDM 500, must be submitted according to the Lake Erie College format. The education committee accepts or rejects the proposal. The final written project becomes part of the research collection of the College. Students must present three (3) unmarked, accurate copies to the department for binding 30 days prior to graduation. The College will retain two, and one will be returned to the student. Fees for preparing and binding of manuscript are the student’s responsibility.
A content advisor will be appointed for each candidate. This individual will counsel and guide the candidate through to the conclusion of the project. A second reader will be appointed to
review each project or portfolio. Should the content advisor and the second reader disagree about the acceptability of the project/ portfolio, a third reader will be employed. Students planning to graduate in the following semesters must have their project completed and approved by:
- Fall Oct. 30
- Spring March 15
- Summer July 1
Continuing Projects
Students who do not complete EDM 565 during the semester registered may continue working on their project during subsequent semesters with the content advisor by registering for extended hours. Coursework will be given a grade of “I” (incomplete) until the paper is accepted. At that time a grade will be awarded to the final hours. Previous “I” grades will be changed to “P” (pass).
