Hall of Fame - 1993

Susan Meyer Bach

Susan Myer Bach majored in equestrian studies and business administration. She received her bachelor of arts degree Summa Cum Laude from Lake Erie College in 1980. During the winter term of her junior year, she participated in the Academic Term Abroad at a riding center in Waterstock, England. She was an outstanding field hockey player and while in England, she did an independent study on the competition of women's field hockey in the United States and England.

Meyer Bach was also a member of the basketball team and the riding club, and was elected to Mortar Board. For her outstanding athletic and academic achievements as an undergraduate she was awarded the Jane White Lincoln Award during both her junior and senior year.

After graduating from Lake Erie College in 1980, she spent two years working on a horse farm and in real estate development. In 1984 she received a master of business administration degree with a concentration in finance from Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Over the next seven years in New York City, she held the position of corporate finance officer in banking and senior consultant and manager in a real estate development company.

She now lives in Dallas, Texas with her husband and son where she continues to run and play tennis when possible.

Lake Erie College and the Hall of Fame Committee are pleased to honor Susan Meyer Bach as an inductee into the Athletic Hall of Fame, April 21, 1993.

Ruth White Miller

Ruth White Miller attended Lake Erie College on an athletic scholarship and received her bachelor of arts degree with a major in music education and a minor in psychology in 1942. In 1948, she received a master of arts degree from Claremont Graduate School in Claremont, California and became a certified clinical psychologist.

During her time at Lake Erie College, White Miller participated in all the sports which were offered by the school, including field hockey, basketball, swimming, track, bowling and archery with a special attention to tennis. Additionally, before college she played professional baseball in a women's league for four years.

From 1942 to 1944 she worked for the Air Force in a dual capacity as the musical conductor for the Air Service Command Chorus and as a psychologist directing the writing of a new civil service manual.

Throughout her career, White Miller continued to work in both fields simultaneously, directing either a choir or a band while also doing something related to psychology. In 1944, she became assistant dean of students at Antioch College and after she received her master's degree, she started her own school for emotionally disturbed children in Laguna Beach, California which she ran from 1949-1952.

She then took a 12-year break from her career to start a family, during which time she developed a burning interest in golf and has been playing professionally ever since. She has played in most of the major national tournaments and has been a medalist or semi-finalist in many of them.

When White Miller returned to work in 1964, she taught sex education to junior high school students and later to seniors in high school, as well as a course in parenting. She spent 19 years involved in summer camping, always leading the singing, sometimes teaching tennis, sailing and ended up as a camp director for the Utica, New York, YWCA. She continues to be active in golf most recently winning the Super Senior Tournament in Hilton Head in 1989. She now lives in California.

The Hall of Fame Committee recognizes all of these accomplishments by honoring Ruth Miller as an inductee into our Athletic Hall of Fame on April 21, 1993.

Joanne Szadkowski

Joanne Szadkowski majored in health, physical education and equestrian studies at Lake Erie College and received her bachelor of arts degree in 1981. Her Academic Term Abroad was spent at Kellet's Riding Center in Ireland. She played volleyball and basketball for three years and was an outstanding player. She earned letters in both sports all three years, was awarded Most Valuable Player in both sports and served terms as captain for both teams. In addition, Szadkowski played for two years on the Lake Erie College softball team.

During her senior year, she received the "Most Outstanding Leadership Award" for all three varsity teams at the spring all-sports award program at the Manor House. She rode and competed regularly and was a member of riding club, an officer of SASG, a member of Mortar Board and a recipient of the Jane White Lincoln Award. Joanne has been a staff member for the last 12 years at Andrews School for Girls in Willoughby, Ohio. She was appointed first as a health and physical education teacher, student activities director and athletic coach. During her time at Andrews she has coached volleyball for 11 years, basketball for eight, softball for four and field hockey for one. She started the volleyball program at Andrews in 1982 and is still coaching the varsity team. In 1984 she became the athletics director, a position which she held for six years until she was appointed to her current position of dean of students in 1988. She also continues to teach physical education and coach volleyball.

In 1986, she received a master's degree from Kent State University in social psychology of sport and motor behavior. Szadkowski is presently a member of the National Association of Secondary School Principals and of the National Association of Women in Education. Since college, her athletic activities have focused on outdoor adventures. She continues to ride and her passion for backpacking has led her to mountain ranges all over the country, most recently to a month long expedition to Alaska.
