Lorraine Sterkel Blaylock

Lorraine Sterkel Blaylock graduated from Lake Erie College in 1942 with a major in sociology. She was a member of the photography club during her freshman year. In her sophomore year, she participated in the Civil Pilot Training Program, was a member of the science and aviation clubs, worked on the circulation staff of the Lantern, was a class representative to the athletic board, and earned honors in varsity hockey, serving as forward.

During her third year, she continued participation in the science and aviation clubs, served as vice president, and won honors in both varsity hockey and basketball. As a senior, she was a business manager of the Athletic Association, repeated varsity honors in hockey and continued involvement in the science club.

Sterkel Blaylock was also an active participant in modern dance, was a captain of the swim team and was very active in track and field, earning honors in the annual Sports Day events.

As one of the first students to earn her pilot's license under the Lake Erie aviation program, she served in the U.S. Air Force as a women's Air Force Service (WASP) pilot in World War II, during which time she earned both land and seaplane ratings. She also earned an engine license from the U.S. Army Air Corps. She was an active American Red Cross volunteer and regularly helped others who were in need. While still in college, she served as the only female lifeguard at the Euclid Park Pool.

A faithful alumna, Sterkel Blaylock attended all of her class reunions. She and her husband, Bill, raised six children. World travelers, she and her husband circled the globe five times, visiting more than 100 countries. The couple completed a six-month freighter trip around the world in 1973. They also enjoyed golf and tennis. She called her recollections of LEC "great and happy years."

Sterkel Blaylock passed away April 27, 1995.

The Lake Erie College Hall of Fame Committee recognizes all of the accomplishments of Lorraine Sterkel Blaylock with her posthumous induction into the Athletic Hall of Fame on April 24, 1996.

Vickie Lynn Ehrlich

Vickie Lynn Ehrlich graduated from Lake Erie College magna cum laude in 1988 with a biology major. Just prior to graduation, she received the Jane White Lincoln Award, presented to the Outstanding Senior Athlete.

She was voted Most Valuable Player for varsity softball in both 1987 and 1988. She was a member of the all-tournament basketball team in 1984. Excelling in the classroom as well as in sports, Ehrlich was a regular member of the Dean's List, inducted in both Mortar Board and Alpha Lambda Delta, and a recipient of the College's Principal and Athletic Scholarships all four years. She served as president of the College's Italian Club, Il Convivo, in 1987.

After graduating from Lake Erie, Ehrlich earned her master of science degree in exercise physiology from Kent State University. She then earned a doctor of medicine degree form the Medical College of Ohio in 1994. She is in training as a family practice resident at Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Carolina Baptist Hospital in North Carolina. She expects to complete her residency in June 1997.

As a family practice resident, she has practiced on the sidelines as a team physician for high school football during the last two seasons. Ehrlich is also a captain in the United States Air Force and will serve four years in the Air Force as a family physician after completing her residency.

Among her personal interests are volleyball, basketball, racquetball, running, outdoor activities, traveling, music, and studying Italian language and culture.

The Lake Erie College Hall of Fame Committee recognizes all of the accomplishments of Vickie Lynn Ehrlich with her induction into the Athletic Hall of Fame on April 24, 1996.

M. Sue Dreitzler

M. Sue Dreitzler came to Lake Erie College in 1978 as athletic administrator and assistant professor of physical education. In the former position, her responsibilities included the rejuvenation of the women's intercollegiate athletic program and supervision of the program for the Jane White Lincoln Center for Physical Education and recreation which opened in 1978.

For three years, Dreitzler also coached the women's volleyball team and, as a member of the physical education faculty, also taught academic courses in athletic training, psychology of coaching, and analysis of team sports, along with activity courses in conditioning and jogging.

In 1983, Dreitzler was named dean of students, a position she held for five years. She was also the affirmative action officer for the College. Dreitzler then accepted the position of director of development at Lake Erie College and, in 1991, she received the title of vice-president for institutional advancement.

Before coming to Lake Erie College, Dreitzler received her undergraduate degree in physical education from Bowling Green State University and her master of arts degree in administration and curriculum from Kent State University. Her first teaching position was at Old Trail School in Bath, Ohio, as chairperson of education and athletics department. Prior to Lake Erie College, she served MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Illinois, as coordinator of women's sports.

She has maintained her interest in physical activity and recreation by still participating in tennis, skiing, fishing, and other sports and by supporting the intercollegiate athletic program at Lake Erie College.

The Lake Erie College Hall of Fame Committee recognizes all of the efforts of M. Sue Dreitzler to the college's athletic program and department with her induction into the Athletic Hall of Fame on April 23, 1997.

Catherine Fraser Shaw

Catherine Fraser Shaw, known to many as "Kay" came to Lake Erie College in 1954 where she served 16 years as associate professor of physical education and head of the department, as well as area chair of human development before being granted the rank of full professor in 1970. She retired in 1987.

During her 33 years at Lake Erie, Fraser Shaw either supervised or taught archery, tennis, bowling, badminton, field hockey, skiing, volleyball, lacrosse, softball, riding and sailing. She also served as advisor to the dwan club, the synchronized swimming club, for 28 years.

Before coming to Lake Erie, she worked as assistant professor of physical education at the University of Maine and instructor of physical training and assistant in intramurals at the University of Texas. She earned her bachelor's degree in physical education from Boston University's Sargent College of Physical Education, and her master's degree in the same field from Smith College.

She was inducted as a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honorary Society. She served as counselor for numerous camps, taught junior high and for 20 years, was a national basketball, volleyball and field hockey official.

Shortly after retirement from the physical education department, Fraser Shaw rejoined the Lake Erie staff as assistant to the dean for the academic program abroad. Today, she continues to serve as a volunteer, specializing in the preparation and placement of Lake Erie College students going to The Netherlands.

Upon her retirement, Lake Erie College established an endowed scholarship in her honor. The fund was started with gifts from alumni, colleagues, students and friends. The Catherine F. Shaw Performance Scholarship is awarded to provide merit-based scholarship opportunities for women who have demonstrated leadership in high school and college and who have the potential for leadership on the Lake Erie College campus. Throughout her entire association with Lake Erie College, she has exemplified service and dedication to her students and her college.

The Lake Erie College Hall of Fame Committee recognizes all of these efforts and contributions of Kay Shaw to the college's athletic program and department with her induction into the Athletic Hall of Fame on April 24, 1996.
