Hall of Fame - 1998

Martha Newman

Martha Newman, after attending the University of Pittsburgh and Lakeland Community College, came to Lake Erie College to complete her bachelor of science degree cum laude with a major in psychology in 1984.

During her two years at Lake Erie, she participated on intercollegiate basketball, cross country and softball teams. She was a basketball captain both years, receiving the Most Valuable Player award her senior year.

Her interest in basketball continued after graduation, both as a player and coach. She has been an assistant varsity coach at Lakeland Community College and Andrews School for Girls. She also was head coach for junior high softball and basketball teams at Andrews, and was the school's first head coach for cross country.

Since college graduation, Martha had dedicated her life to "at risk" youth. She was program officer at Cleveland's Youth Development Center, coordinating plans and acting as a consultant for intake and pre-release procedures for nearly 100 youths who have been involved with the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court system.

Previously, she held similar positions at the Lake County Juvenile Justice Center (Painesville), at St. Vincent Charity Hospital (Cleveland) and the Bellefaire Jewish Children's Bureau (Shaker Heights). Concurrently, she has pursued graduate studies in Clinical Psychology at Cleveland State University.

The Lake Erie College Athletic Hall of Fame Committee recognizes all of these efforts by Martha Newman with her induction into the Athletic Hall of Fame on April 22, 1998.*

*Since induction, Newman served as co-head coach of the Storm women's basketball team for two seasons (2001-02 and 2002-03).

Patricia Mizicko Shields

Patricia Mizicko received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Lake Erie College in 1986, with majors in Arts Management, Dance and Italian. She participated in two Academic Programs Abroad - one in the winter of 1985 in Florence, Italy and another in the spring in Oxford, England.

As a student, she was on the first intercollegiate cross country team for two years and was starting point guard in basketball for the same length of time. She was active all four years in Modern Dance, taking part in the yearly student dance concerts and doing the choreography for "Godspell."

An accomplished swimmer, Shields was a certified American Red Cross water safety instructor and a volunteer four-year member of College Lifeguards.

In addition to athletic involvement, Shields was a member of Mortar Board, Fine Arts Club, Il Convivo, Student Association for Self Government and Social Board.

Since graduation, she has remained physically active in road racing, biathlons, triathlons and bike tours across Iowa. Her dance background had made possible her involvement for five years in the Arlington Dance Theatre Company and the Central Australian Dance Theatre for two years.
In 1987, she became Mrs. David Shields and now has two young children. She is very active in her church, a member of important committees, and coordinator of the Children's Nursery and Vacation Bible School.

The Lake Erie College Athletic Hall of Fame Committee recognizes all of these accomplishments by Patricia Mizicko Shields with induction into the Athletic Hall of Fame on April 22, 1998.
