Greg Stocks is the first men's lacrosse head coach in program history for the sport slated to compete at the club level during the 2008-09 academic year before becoming a varsity sport in the spring of 2010.

"We were looking for an individual who could 'hit the ground running' in starting up our men's lacrosse program," said Lake Erie College director of athletics Griz Zimmermann. "Greg brings not only a wealth of experience in the sport of lacrosse, but his passion and enthusiasm are just what we need to provide a solid foundation for the new program."

Stocks is a 2006 graduate of Mercyhurst College with a bachelor's degree in business. Upon graduation he served as an assistant at Lycoming College where he was instrumental in the Warrior's offensive game planning. He also served as an assistant for one season at Division II No. 10 Wingate University where the Bulldogs went 11-4 overall and 3-1 in the Deep South Conference in 2007.

The native of Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada played lacrosse at SUNY-Potsdam for two years and then at Mercyhurst for two years. As an attacker his senior season, the team won the East Coast Conference (ECC) and was a national semifinalist.

According to US Lacrosse, the sport's national governing body, lacrosse is one of the fastest growing team sports in the United States. Youth membership (ages 15 and under) in US Lacrosse has more than tripled since 1999 from 40,000 to more than 125,000. Throughout the past 10 years, no sport has grown faster at the high school level with an estimated 169,000 high school players.
Considered to be America's first sport, lacrosse is also the fastest-growing sport over the last five years at the NCAA level. More than 400 college club programs are in existence, the majority of which compete under the umbrella of US Lacrosse and its "intercollegiate associates" level.

"The College's athletic department has grown significantly throughout the past few years and we are pleased to add a sport that is one of the fastest growing sports in the country," said Zimmermann. "Adding men's lacrosse will add to our male enrollment which aides our ongoing quest for a better balance of men and women on campus."
