Storm Loses In Playoff Upset
PAINESVILLE, OH. Sixth-seeded Frostburg outshot the third-seeded host Storm 14-6. Frostburg scored one goal in each half, both of which went unanswered by Lake Erie. Storm keeper Mike Loparo (Lyndhurst, Ohio/Brush) recorded seven saves for the day as Lake Erie concluded the season with an overall record of 10-8-1.

Storm Set to Host AMCC First Round Game
PAINESVILLE, OH. (October 24, 2006) - Despite losing 3-1 to undefeated league champion Medaille College this afternoon, the Lake Erie College men's soccer team will still host a first round Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) game on Saturday.

The Storm scored on an own goal at the 29th minute mark of Tuesday's game giving them a 1-0 lead. However, the Maverick miscue would be the only time the ball would find the back of the net in Lake Erie's favor. LEC was held to only one shot on goal, while the Mavericks took a total of 24 shots.

Lake Erie has secured at least a top four finish in the conference. They could finish in the top three depending on how the remaining league games play out on Wednesday. The Storm will host an opponent to be determined at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Storm Puts Up Fight Against No. 15 CWRU
PAINESVILLE, OH. (October 18, 2006) - Insurmountable odds were challenged Wednesday night as Lake Erie College made their presence known in the home of No.15 Case Western Reserve University.

Playing against one of the NCAA's top teams on their home field, it was expected for the Storm to come in to unfamiliar territory and lie down. Amidst the heckling on the field and in the stands, the Lake Erie underdogs showed they were not to be taken lightly.

From the opening possession, Storm keeper Mike Loparo (Lyndhurst, Ohio/Brush) was put up against the CWRU firing squad but quickly demonstrated why he is this week's Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Keeper of the Week. Within the first minute of the game, he recorded the first of his six saves as the Spartans went on to take 17 shots in the 90 minutes of play.

CWRU slipped one past Loparo in the 14th minute, but Lake Erie rebounded in the 36th minute on a penalty kick from sophomore Justin Rraya (Parma, Ohio/Normandy). The score remained tied the remainder of the first half.

In the second period, Case took their second lead of the game in the 54th minute on a penalty kick only to have LEC equalize 11 minutes later on a goal by sophomore Joe Starvaggi (Lyndhurst, Ohio/Brush). Case finished with the upper hand, scoring their final goal in the 84th minute to give them the 3-2 advantage as they improved to 12-2-1 on the season.

Lake Erie drops to 9-5-1 overall heading into Saturday's AMCC game against Mount Aloysius College.

Teams are selected by D3Kicks.com based on nominations from collegiate coaches and sports information directors.

Third Times the Charm
PAINESVILLE, OH. (October 10, 2006) - Lake Erie College changed their game plan to score early and earn their third consecutive Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) win against Hilbert College 3-0 Tuesday afternoon.

Just as the Storm began to get comfortable making up for first-half deficits, Tuesday they went out and proved they were also capable of taking an early lead and keeping it thoughout the game.

Senior Brad McFadden (Niles, Ohio/Niles McKinley) scored in the 14th minute to give LEC the lead they would never relinquish. Next, senior Tim Basalla (Euclid, Ohio/Euclid) headed the second goal off a cross from freshman Nick Teriaca (Lyndhurst, Ohio/Brush) to go up by two heading into the half. The final goal was scored by junior Kevin Ankuda (Concord, Ohio/Lake Catholic) off a flip throw in from sophomore Alex Goreta (Parma, Ohio/Normandy).

The win improves Lake Erie to 8-4-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the AMCC.

The Storm went down 1-0 after a Redhawk goal snuck past LEC keeper Mike Loparo (Lyndhurst, Ohio/Brush) in the 25th minute. Lake Erie diddn't equalize until the 58th minute on a Justin Daly (Hubbard, Ohio/Hubbard) shot. Then in the 64th minute, senior Matt Tringhese (Hubbard, Ohio/Hubbard) scored the go-ahead goal off a pass from Joe Starvaggi (Lyndhurst, Ohio/Brush).

In the first half, the Storm was unable to capitalize on any of their nine attempts as the Lions found the back of the net once in only four attempts.

The second half began much like the first, however Lake Erie tied the game on a penalty kick by sophomore Justin Rraya (Parma, Ohio/Normandy) in the 67th minute. The goal sparked Lake Erie as they went on to score four unanswered goals.

The Storm is now 6-4-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the AMCC with their next league game on Saturday against La Roche.

Storm Slips at Altoona
PAINESVILLE, OH. (September 30, 2006) - In a cold and rainy evening Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) game Saturday, the Lake Erie College men's soccer team slipped in the standings with a 4-1 loss to undefeated league foe Penn State Altoona.

Lake Erie trailed 2-0 at halftime after Altoona goals came at the eight and 20-minute marks, the second one off a penalty kick after an inside-the-box foul. Ten seconds into the second half, Altoona scored again to put the Storm down by three where they would remain until Lake Erie senior Matt Tringhese (Hubbard, Ohio/Hubbard) scored on a corner kick from the right wing in the 77th minute.

That was as close as LEC would get, with Altoona adding a bit more insurance in the 87th minute. Lake Erie was held to just six shots for the night, four on goal, whereas the Lions attempted 26 shots, including 14 on goal.

The Panthers clawed their way back in the 76th minute on an unassisted shot to stall the game at one. The Storm's four shots in the first extra period were unsuccessful, as were Pitt-Bradford's two, keeping the game tied at one and causing a second overtime. In the final period, three yellow cards hindered Lake Erie as the team did not manage a single shot. Luckily the Panther's two missed their mark allowing the game to end in a tie.
