named women's hoops coach: other staff added Painesville,
Ohio-. (Sept. 7, 2005) - Bob Booher, former coach at Lakeland Community
College, is the new head women's
basketball
coach at Lake Erie College, announced LEC Athletic Director Ken Krsolovic.
He replaces Carla Richardson, who resigned in July after two seasons
as head coach. The
56-year old was named Coach of the Year in the Ohio Community College
Athletic Association in both 2003 and 2005. Lakeland's teams were ranked
among the Top 20 in the nation five times during his tenure, during
which he coached three junior college All-Americans, six all-region
performers and 19 all-conference selections. Fourteen of his players
went on to compete at four-year institutions. A native of Painesville and a graduate of nearby Harvey High, Booher graduated from Ohio University in 1971 and earned his masters degree from Kent State in 1980. He will continue his duties as chairman of the Physical Education Department at Lakeland. He resides in Willoughby with his wife Debbie. They are the parents of Kristy (27) and Ross (22). Also added to the Lake Erie College athletic staff for the up coming year is Interim Head Men's and Women's Cross Country Coach Bryan Harmon. A product of Mentor, Ohio and Mentor High, Harmon graduated from Tiffin University in May. He earned seven letters in cross country and track at Tiffin, and was the team's most improved cross country runner in 2002. Four graduate assistants round out the newcomers. Brittney Murphy (Capital University '05) will serve as Sports Information Director, Scott Fremont (Saint Joseph's University '03) as Sports Marketing Director/Assistant Baseball Coach, Micky McManus (University of Rio Grande '05) as Assistant Soccer Coach/Intramural Director) and Alyssa Rickert (Ohio Northern University '05) as Assistant Basketball Coach/Game Operations Director. -30- TRANSACTIONS
Sargent
Honored for Superb Season Sargent, an honorable mention selection, finished her freshman campaign averaging team-highs of 13.3 points and 9.2 rebounds per game. The 5-9 forward accounted for 35 percent of the team's scoring output and totaled eight double-doubles on the year. She scored a career-high 23 points against Pitt-Bradford on Feb. 18 and had a career-best 18 rebounds versus Hilbert on Dec. 4. Sargent ranked ninth in the AMCC in scoring, fifth in rebounding, seventh in steals, and 12th in field goal percentage at the end of the regular season. Sargent joins
Carletta Harrell, an honorable mention selection in 2002, as the only
Lake Erie freshmen to be named to the all-conference squad. Wright
Leads Storm in Her Final Collegiate Contest Freshman Loni Sargent (Hubbard, Ohio/Hubbard) and Sarah Miller (Covington, Ky./Holmes), a sophomore, also each had nine points and nine rebounds in the loss, while the Storm's only other senior, Erin Kinter (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon), totaled four points and three rebounds in her final game in the green and white. Behrend,
which was led by sophomore Tenesha Aden's 26-point, 10-rebound effort,
opened the game on a 10-0 run and cruised to a 51-10 halftime lead en
route to the victory. Victory
Slips Away from Storm Down the Stretch, Sargent Records Career-High The game was tied at 42 with 7:26 remaining, but Bradford pulled away with a 10-2 run over the next five minutes. Sarah Miller (Covington, Ky./Holmes), a sophomore, added eight points and 11 rebounds, while senior Bianca Wright (Cleveland, Ohio/Shaw) had nine points and nine rebounds in the loss. Sophomore Brittany McLean led the Lady Panthers with 19 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals. Lake Erie's

Goes for a Double-Double in Storm Loss Lake
Erie defeated the Mounties, 57-41, earlier in the season for its only
win. The
Storm will be back in action next Friday, playing host to Pitt-Bradford
at 5 p.m. Altoona pulled away early in the first half, using a 22-5 run to widen its 10-5 advantage at the 16:10 mark to 32-10 en route to a 36-17 halftime lead. The second half continued as the first half had ended, with the Lions opening on a 24-5 run. Bianca Wright (Cleveland, Ohio/Shaw), a senior, added 11 points and seven rebounds in the loss, while sophomore Sarah Miller (Covington, Ky./Holmes) had a game-high seven assists to go along with six rebounds. Sargent also had five steals in the losing effort. Tara Srock, a senior, led Altoona with 15 points and eight rebounds. Lake Erie
will play at Mount Aloysius tomorrow. The AMCC contest will tip-off
at 2:00 p.m. Miller
Posts Double-Double to Lead Three Storm Players in Double Digits The Storm traded leads with La Roche three times in the opening half and led by as much as five with 2:47 remaining in the period before the Redhawks scored seven straight points to grab a 20-18 lead heading into the locker rooms. La Roche secured early control in the second half, opening the stanza on a 15-2 run, and held on for the win. Lake Erie's Loni Sargent (Hubbard, Ohio/Hubbard), a freshman, led all scorers with 18 points while also collecting seven rebounds and three steals. Senior Bianca Wright (Cleveland, Ohio/Shaw) added 13 points and eight rebounds in the loss, while Truly Gaston led La Roche with 16 points and five steals. The Storm
will continue their conference road swing with games at Penn State-Altoona
and Mount Aloysius on Friday and Saturday. Lake Erie will tip-off at
5:30 p.m. against Altoona on Friday before traveling to Aloysius for
a 4:00 p.m. contest on Saturday. Sargent
Scores 11, Storm Lose Home Conference Contest The Bobcats, who are a perfect 14-0 in conference play, jumped out to an 18-2 lead over the first 10 minutes of the contest and took a 38-14 halftime lead. The second half was not much different, as Frostburg outscored the Storm 49-15. Tracey Little, a senior, led all scorers with 26 points and added nine rebounds in the win, while junior Holly Steinacker chipped in with 10 points off the bench. Lake Erie
will resume AMCC play with a game at La Roche on Tuesday, Feb. 8. Tip-off
is slated for 5:30 p.m. Sargent
Records Seventh Double-Double, Storm Lose Greensburg opened the game on a 21-0 run en route to a 44-5 halftime lead and coasted to the win. The Bobcats's Rebecca Maksin, a freshman, led all scorers with 14 points, and fellow freshman Tiffany Menhorn added 11 points. Lake Erie
will host Frostburg State in another AMCC contest tomorrow afternoon
at 2:00 p.m. Frostburg defeated the Storm, 87-24, earlier this season. Sargent
Leads Storm in Road Loss The host Mavericks opened the game with a 15-2 run over the first three minutes of play and climbed to a 46-17 halftime advantage. Meadaille continue to stretch its lead in the second half en route to the easy win. Kelly Bellino (Independence, Ohio/Independence), a freshman, contributed eight points, four rebounds, and three steals for the Storm, while Sargent added four steals in the loss. Amanda Baker led all scorers with 20 points and had a game-high five steals. Lake Erie
will continue AMCC play with a home game on Friday, Feb. 4 at 5:00 p.m.

Scores 20 and Wright has Double-Double in Conference Road Loss The Storm trailed 37-20 at halftime and could not mount a comeback against the host Hawks, who also held a 34-31 second half scoring advantage. Hilbert junior Autumn Lee-Jeffries led all scorers with 26 points, while Amy Anderson, a sophomore, totaled 20 points in the win. Lake Erie
will continue its Buffalo swing with a 2:00 p.m. AMCC match-up with

Collects Double-Double, Storm Lose Conference Home Contest The two teams played a tight first half until the 4:13 mark when La Roche started a 7-2 run to end the period. The Redhawks stretched their lead to 38-28 midway through the second stanza and then pulled a way with a 17-5 run over the final 5:27. Loni Sargent (Hubbard, Ohio/Hubbard), a freshman, added 13 points, six rebounds, and three steals in the losing effort, while La Roche sophomore Kari Whiteman totaled a game-high 19 points. Junior forward Megan Snyder added 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Redhawks. Lake Erie
will continue AMCC play with a weekend road trip to Buffalo. The Storm
will visit Hilbert on Friday, Jan. 28 at 6:00 p.m., and then play at
Medaille on Saturday, Jan. 29 at 2:00 p.m. Wright
Paces Storm in Conference Road Loss The Panthers outscored Lake Erie 40-18 in the second half after grabbing a 32-22 advantage at the break. Bradford opened the second half on a 26-8 run to ruin any hopes of a Storm comeback. Freshman Loni Sargent (Hubbard, Ohio/Hubbard) had 10 points and six rebounds for Lake Erie, while sophomore Sarah Miller (Covington, Ky./Holmes) added nine points and game-highs of 11 rebounds and six assists in the loss. Bradford senior Cassandra Walker led all scorers with 21 points. Lake Erie
will return home for another AMCC contest on Tuesday, Jan. 25. It will
play host to La Roche at 5:30 p.m. Sargent
and Wright Each Score Nine in Conference Loss Behrend never trailed in the second half and led by as much as 40 points after pulling away in the final 10 minutes of the opening stanza. The Storm led early in the first half and stayed as close as 16-15 with 10:17 remaining in the period, but both teams headed to the locker rooms following a 27-4 Behrend run. Behrend forward Amber Krumpe led all scorers in with 15 points, and the senior also pulled down a game-high eight rebounds. Lake Erie
will travel to Pitt-Bradford tomorrow for a 4:00 p.m. AMCC contest. Williams
and Sargent Still Ranked Nationally Williams, who leads the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference in steals, is 25th in the nation with 2.7 per game. Meanwhile, Sargent is ranked 34th in rebounding, averaging 10.7 rebounds per contest as of Jan. 16. Both the men and women will be on the road this weekend, traveling to Penn State-Behrend on Friday, Jan. 21 and then to Pitt-Bradford on Saturday. Opening tip on Friday is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. for the women and 8:00 p.m. for the men. The games are slated to begin at 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. on Saturday. Sargent
Nearly Hits for Triple-Double, Storm Lose at Home The Storm closed to within 14 points, 55-41, with 8:43 remaining in the contest after a dominating first half by Wooster. However, the Fighting Scots went on a 7-0 run and pulled away to earn the win. Wooster took a 37-16 lead into the locker rooms at halftime. Bianca Wright (Cleveland, Ohio/Shaw), a senior, added 10 points and eight rebounds in the loss, while sophomore Sarah Miller (Covington, Ky./Holmes) had seven points, six rebounds and five assists for Lake Erie. Freshman Carly Loehrke led Wooster with 14 points, six assists and five rebounds. The Storm
will return to Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play on Friday,
Jan. 21 at Penn State-Behrend. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Keller
Registers Career-High in Storm Loss Penn State-Altoona, which never trailed in the game, jumped out to an early 11-3 lead en route to a 35-19 halftime advantage. The Lions continued their surge in the second half, and extended their lead to 28 at one point. Loni Sargent (Hubbard, Ohio/Hubbard), a freshman, added nine points and 11 rebounds for the Storm, while senior Bianca Wright (Cleveland, Ohio/Shaw) had eight points and 11 boards in the loss. Altoona's Tara Stock, a senior, led all scorers with 15 points, while teammate Erin Shields, a junior, chipped in with 14. Lake Erie
will host Wooster in non-conference action on Wednesday, Jan. 19 at
7:00 p.m. Sargent
and Wright Record Double-Doubles to Lead Storm to First Win Lake Erie, which led the entire game, outscored the Mounties 34-27 in the second half to secure the win despite a 16-point second half effort by Aloysius senior Missy Wertz. Sargent, who finished with a team-high 17 points, countered Wertz's outburst with 11 points, while Wright added eight. The Storm scored first on a Sarah Miller (Covington, Ky./Holmes) lay-up and jumped out to an 11-3 lead midway through the first half. Aloysius climbed to within three, 13-10, with 4:25 remaining in the period, but Lake Erie ended the first half on a 10-4 run. Wright finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Miller, a sophomore, had eight points and 14 rebounds. Sargent added 13 rebounds, six assists and three steals, while fellow freshman Stephanie Cutler (Orwell, Ohio/Grand Valley) had 10 boards. The Storm outrebounded Aloysius 65-42 as a team, while holding the Mounties to 17-of-85 (20 percent) shooting from the field. Lake Erie
will play host to Penn State-Altoona in more AMCC action tomorrow at
4:00 p.m. Sargent
and Williams Listed in First NCAA Statistical Rankings Sargent, a freshman on the women's squad, was ranked ninth in the nation in steals per game (4.8) and 25th in rebounds (11.5), while Williams, a sophomore for the men, ranked 20th in free throw percentage (89.7) and 23rd in steals (2.8). The men are currently 4-6 overall and 2-2 in AMCC play, while the women are 0-7 overall and 0-4 in conference action. Second
Half Woes Lead to Loss, Sargent Posts 17 Greensburg started the second half on a 17-0 spurt and allowed only eight total points in the stanza to secure the win. The second half run was nearly identical to the 10-0 run the Bobcats had to open the contest. Tiffany Menhorn, a freshman, had 14 points to lead three Greensburg players in double-digits. Lake Erie
will return home to host AMCC newcomer Mount Aloysius on Friday, Jan.
14 at 6:00 p.m. Lake
Erie Drops Conference Road Game The Storm remained close through the opening seven minutes of the contest, trailing 9-7, but surrendered 21 unanswered points to the host Bobcats. Frostburg took a 34-13 lead into the locker rooms at the half. Lake Erie (0-6, 0-3) managed only one point over the first seven-plus minutes of the second stanza, while Frostburg climbed to a 59-14 lead. Senior Erin Kinter (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) added five points and seven rebounds in the loss. Meanwhile, Tracey Little, a senior, had a game-high 19 points to lead Frostburg. Lake Erie
will travel to Pitt-Greensburg tonight to prepare for tomorrow's 4:00
p.m. conference contest with the Bobcats. Sargent
Records Fourth Double-Double in Losing Effort After falling behind by seven points early in the first half, the Storm rallied to cut the deficit to 16-12 with 7:05 remaining in the period. However, Hiram ended the half on a 14-6 run to take a 30-18 halftime lead. The Terriers proved to be to tough for Lake Erie, which did hold a 44-33 rebounding advantage on the game, in the second half, opening the stanza on a 20-4 run. Senior Bianca Wright (Cleveland, Ohio/Shaw) added eight points and five rebounds in the losing effort. Amanda Hummel, a senior, led three Terrier players in double digits with 11 points. Sophomore Cassie Bedard and junior Jessica Harris each had 10 points in the win. Lake Erie
will resume Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play on Friday,
Jan. 7 at 6:00 p.m. against Frostburg State. Storm
Fall at Hiram Despite Sargent's Double-Double Lake Erie never led in the contest and was set back by 24-4 and 21-6 runs that gave the host Terriers a 45-10 halftime advantage. Brandie Turner, a freshman, finished with a game-high 15 points in the win, while freshmen Rachel Keller (Richmond Hts., Ohio/Richmond Hts.) and Jo Jo Boggs (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) had four points each for Lake Erie. The Storm
will be off until Tuesday, Jan. 4 at which time they will host Hiram
in a rematch. The contest is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Grove
City Game Canceled Tickets for
the game, which may be made up at a later date, will be honored if the
contest is rescheduled or may be exchanged for any remaining date. Sargent

Bellino finished with nine points and 11 rebounds for Lake Erie, while Sargent added three assists and three steals. Jeffries and freshman Amanda McHale each had double-doubles for the Hawks. Jeffries totaled 20 points, 10 rebounds and eight blocks, while McHale had 12 points, 14 rebounds, four steals and three blocks. Lake Erie
is scheduled to resume its season on Tuesday, Dec. 14 in a non-conference
contest at home against Grove City. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Storm

The Storm failed to regroup in the second stanza, as Medaille opened the half with a 25-2 run. Senior Bianca Wright (Cleveland, Ohio/Shaw) and freshman Amy Shaffer (Warren, Ohio/JFK) added four rebounds apiece for Lake Erie. Clark totaled a game-high 17 points in the win, while fellow freshman Amanda Baker had 10 points and six rebounds. Lake Erie
will be back in action tomorrow, Dec. 4, at 2:00 p.m. They play host
to AMCC newcomer Hilbert. Sargent
Shines in Collegiate Debut, Storm Lose Bluffton jumped out to a 20-0 lead over the first 5:49 of the contest and never looked back. The Storm cut the lead to 16 at one point in the first half but trailed 42-17 heading into the locker rooms. The Beavers did not relent in the second half en route to the victory. Sargent added eight steals and six assists in her debut, while senior Bianca Wright (Cleveland, Ohio/Shaw) had six points. Freshman Ashleigh Stallkamp led Bluffton with 17 points, while fellow freshman Lindsay Bush had 10 points and 11 rebounds. Lake Erie
will return to action on Friday, Dec. 3, playing host to Allegheny Mountain
Collegiate Conference newcomer Medaille. They will tip-off at 6:00 p.m. Lake
Erie College Hoops Switch to WELW Radio The broadcasts begin with the Storm's men's game at Mount Union on Tuesday, November 30. One additional men's non-conference game is on the slate, at Division II Findlay on Thursday, December 16. Allegheny Mountain Conference games scheduled to air, include games at Medaille, Pitt-Bradford, La Roche, and Penn State-Behrend. The women's games at La Roche and Behrend will be carried as well. At least one additional "wild card" broadcast will be added at a later date. Each broadcast will also be accessible worldwide on the internet at welw.com and area Comcast cable television subscribers can listen on Channel 99. Ken Krsolovic, who broadcast nearly 500 men's and women's basketball games for Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia over 14 seasons from 1988 to 2003, will handle the Storm play-by-play for the second straight year. Following
is the complete broadcast schedule: Lake Erie starts its 2004-05 season with a Wednesday, Dec. 1 contest against Bluffton before beginning the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference schedule against Medaille and Hilbert on Friday, Dec. 3 and Saturday, Dec. 4. They will then host Grove City on Tuesday, Dec. 14 before the Hiram showdown. The Storm will return from winter break for a Jan. 4 home game against Hiram before jumping back into AMCC play against Frostburg State, Pitt-Greensburg, Mount Aloysius, Penn State-Altoona, Penn State-Behrend, Pitt-Bradford, La Roche, Hilbert and Medaille. The contest is one of two non-conference games for Lake Erie during the new year. They will also host the College of Wooster in a game scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 19. In all, Lake
Erie, headed by second-year coach Carla Richardson, has 13 scheduled
home games and 10 road contests. |
