The Psychology Major

The Psychology major is designed to increase personal understanding of animal and human behavior and mental processes and to provide basic preparation for entrance into graduate school or pursuit of a professional career in the field of psychology.
Students should realize careers in the field of psychology require further training; many of our students pursue graduate studies in this field.

• All Psychology majors are encouraged to participate in Psi Chi, the National Honor Society in Psychology and the Psychology Club
Career Opportunities
Employment is expanding in the field of psychology. Job opportunities exist at various levels of local, state and federal agencies, and mental health clinics as well as in the private sector and in non-profit treatment and rehabilitation programs. Some of the placements our recent graduates have found are with the Department of Human Services, agencies for the homeless, Alzheimer’s Association, local mental health agencies and graduate school.
International Experiences
Lake Erie College encourages all students to participate in international experiences. Students may wish to spend a semester at one of our “sister” institutions, earning credits towards their degree while learning about other peoples and cultures.
Other international opportunities for students are Study Tours. Study Tours are two-week trips that full-time students may take their Junior or Senior year. Most of the cost of the trip is included within tuition.
Academic Requirements
A Bachelors degree requires at least 128 credit hours. All students graduating from Lake Erie College will complete 20 semester hours of basic requirements including courses in Math, English, Computers, Public Speaking, and Foreign Language. These courses are normally completed during the Freshman year.
Students will also complete 24 hours of core liberal arts courses. These courses include the subject areas of critical thinking, aesthetic forms, scientific inquiry, cultures and values, sophisticated texts, and social sciences. Each major has course specific requirements, and any remaining credits will be considered as electives.
Required Courses for the Psychology Major:
The Psychology major requires 28 semester hours of course work in various areas of psychology, statistics, and research. The BA and the BS degrees both require an additional 16 hours of coursework specific to each type of degree (for a total of at least 44 credit hours).
