Upcoming dates and Events

Story Telling Harvest:
The Annual Storytelling Harvest will take place on the College Green behind College Hall on Saturday, Oct 10, from 10:00 am-12:30 pm. In the past the presenters were only Lake Erie College student volunteers and the students of EDE 410 Literature-Based Reading course. However, this year, local classroom teachers will be invited to read as well. Robin Echols Cooper will also be presenting one of her fantastic stories with the assistance of her high school students that participate in her Literature Leap Program. Each child will receive a FREE book of their choice. This event is a collaboration between Lake Erie and the CARES Literacy Coalition. If anyone would like to volunteer to read or act out a story, please contact Dr. Katharine Delavan at Lake Erie College ( kdelavan@lec.udu ).

Rain Man comes to LEC:
Wednesday Nov. 4, Kim Peek and his father Fran will be on campus as part of the Founders Day activities. Kim Peek is the person that Dustin Hoffman’s character in the movie Rain Man was fashioned after. Mr. Peek will be meeting with the Education Department in a special session between 6 p.m.-8 p.m. Wednesday evening.

Council For Exceptional Children (CEC):
The CEC will be holding its national convention this year in Charlotte, North Carolina this coming November. Dr. Krammer will be speaking at the convention this year on two topics. Both topics are relevant to the students of Lake Erie as they pertain directly to licensure and the PRAXIS exams.

National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC):
The Fall session of the AEYC will be held this years conference at Quail Hollow in Chardon, Ohio. The conference will be held Oct. 17, 2009. Dr. Delavan will be hosting a workshop at the conference called “Let’s Talk About Cultural Competence”.

TEAM-UP at Maple Elementary School:
TEAM-UP is the successful after school reading program at Maple Elementary school in Painesville, Ohio. Dr. Delavan will continue coordinating this program between Lake Erie and Maple. Dr. Delavan will be recruiting volunteers again, so if anyone is interested in developing a relationship with third and fifth grade students, Please let me know. We will also be holding a TEAM-UP Book raiser from November 3 to November 5. Each of the TEAM-UP participants will receive at least one FREE book and we will use the book rewards earned to purchase books for the TEAM-UP Program. 

PRAXIS Information:
A reminder to our Education students, please begin preparing for your next PRAXIS exams as soon as possible. Please go online and find out the dates that apply to you. You will also find practice test that are available for you to study and prepare with. If you have any questions, please contact your Advisor in the Education Department.We will have direct links posted on the Lake Erie Education Department Web Page in the near future; keep an eye open for it.
