Etiquette

STABLE ETIQUETTE
- Clean and Tidy
It is the absolute responsibility of the boarders to clean up after themselves and their horses. There are adequate trash containers as well as shovels, brooms and muck buckets for the disposal of manure, hair, hoof pickings and general refuse. Please use these, and do not leave an unsightly mess in the aisles. Stalls may not be cleaned into the muck buckets in the crosstie areas unless the buckets are taken to the manure pit and dumped. If bedding or manure spills from the wheelbarrow, it must be swept up. This includes around the stall, in the aisles, through the outside doors, and in the drives. YOU MAKE A MESS, YOU CLEAN IT UP!!
- Cross Ties, etc.
Horses must not be left unattended when in the cross ties. Incoming horses have priority for use of the wash rack. Those needing to use the hose in the wash rack have priority. When passing through the aisle with a horse, request cross-tied horses be unsnapped and moved aside to provide a clear and safe passage. Remove the lead rope from the horse’s halter and hang it up when not in use.
- HOSES
The hoses must be hung on the hanger provided after you are finished using them. Horses puncture hoses when they step on them. In winter, the hose is kept in the tack room to prevent it from freezing. Please replace it there when you are finished using it. Drain the hose before putting it in the tack room. (You know it is completely drained when it sounds clear when you blow through it.
- TRAILER PARKING
Horse trailers are to be parked in the designated parking lot to the east of the
buildings. Your trailer license must be on file in the Equestrian Center office.
- RIDING ETIQUETTE
- Gear your ride in consideration of:
- Novice riders
- Green horses
- Condition of your horse
- Ground conditions
- Proper distance between horses
- Those jumping have the right-of-way (unless a lesson is in progress) and must call their fences.
- Lunging must be done so that it does not disturb riders. Do not crack the lunge whip! This is disturbing to other horses and riders.
- Riding ettiquette:
Pass left shoulder to left shoulder.
When moving in the same direction, let your intention to pass be clearly heard.
Do not block the flow of traffic.
When a lesson is in session in any area, you MUST ask the permission of the instructor before entering that area.
Observe the lesson schedule board and LEC class schedule posted by the tack room in the main barn.
- TRAILS
- The use of the trails is a privilege, not a right. Please preserve this for others as well as yourself by obeying the rules and showing courtesy. Before using trails, check with facility manager to be sure trails are open.
- For your safety, no one should go out alone.
- Stay on designated horse trails.
- Obey all traffic laws when riding on the roads.
- Do not disturb livestock.
- Close all gates that you open.
- LEC school horses may go out on trail on LEC property with advanced riders, by permission only of the faculty. An instructor must accompany trail riders.
- Do not use trails if they are muddy. Hoof prints left in the mud collect water and prevent the trails from drying properly. This leaves the footing rough for the horses.
- Trails are closed from dusk to dawn.
IMPORTANT REMINDER: The barn staff is busy with their many daily tasks of caring for the horses and the facility. If we follow the policies in this "Handbook" and do our share of caring for horses, equipment, and the facilities, the faculty, management, and barn staff will be very grateful. |
