Recreational Riding

Recreational riding on LEC owned horses is available to students who sign up for a riding activity class and pay the riding class surcharge. The Associate Dean of Equine Studies, in exchange for barn work, must approve the privilege of riding LEC owned horses during college breaks. Note: Rec riding is NOT available to new students for the first few weeks of classes. Permission to rec ride is given by the instructor when s/he feels confident that the rider is safe and understands the horse(s) s/he has ridden in class. New students will ride horses assigned to their riding class, and horses that they have ridden in class.
- Recreational riding is from 8:00 am to 11:30 am and from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Friday and 8:00 AM to 12:00 noon on Saturday when the barn closes. All horses must be cooled out, groomed and returned to their stalls by the time rec riding is over. This rule will be enforced. There is no recreational riding during horse shows unless hunt field is open.
- Students MUST observe scheduled times for rec riding. There is no rec riding when the office is closed from 12:00 to 1:00 on Friday.
- LEC horses will NOT be permitted to leave the barn after 2:30 p.m. on Fridays or 10:30 a.m. on Saturdays.
- The use of a horse for riding, lunging, or turnout must be noted on the "Horse Use" board as soon as possible to be certain each horse is getting the appropriate use/exercise, and so others know if the horse is or is not available for rec riding,
- The school barn is closed to all on Sundays. The exception is those students showing school horses.
- The hunt field is a RESTRICTED area for riding. A posted sign is in each barn regarding the opening or closing for riding. The dressage rings (sand areas in hunt field) are sometimes available when the grass portion is closed. This will be posted. THE BANK IS OFF LIMITS TO ALL RIDERS. The bank is for instructional use only.
- New students may NOT rec ride on the hunt field or sand dressage arenas without permission from their instructor.
- A sign up sheet listing the horses that may be rec ridden will be posted in the school barn each week. Particular attention should be paid to when certain horses are available.
- Students are to ride horses permanently assigned to their class unless given permission by their instructor to ride a different horse. This is for your safety.
- A scheduled activity has priority in the use of facilities and horses.
- No horse is permitted to go out two (2) consecutive hours, or more than twice each day. Some horses have additional restrictions. Check the "Horse Use" board.
- Each horse has its own bridle. No LEC bridle is to be changed in any way without permission from an instructor or management. A student may use his/her own bridle on a horse for showing, but MUST purchase his own bit for use on his bridle; the bit must be exactly the same as the horse’s LEC school bridle. No bits are to be taken off an LEC school bridle to be put on a student’s own bridle.
- No student may go out on trail with an LEC horse unless accompanied by an LEC instructor. No one is to go on trail alone. Trail riding, only with permission of the facility manager and the instructor, will be for advanced riders.
- Students are responsible for the complete care of the horse from the time it is taken out of the stall until it is returned. This includes thorough grooming (including picking out feet) and checking automatic waterers. If the horse is hand-watered, refill the water bucket.
- Tack MUST be cleaned and returned to its proper place as soon as possible after the horse is returned to its stall. Polos are to be rolled properly and put away unless wet and muddy. Splint boots must be cleaned, rolled up and put away properly. Bits must be rinsed and wiped off.
- School horses may not be jumped during recreational riding unless an instructor is supervising. This includes jumping up and down the bank in the hunt field or the water obstacle.
- Certain advanced horses or those with special schooling problems will be assigned by an individual instructor.
- If any questions or problems arise, see the instructor or manager on duty.
- Recreational riding on an LEC owned horse is limited to students who are currently signed up for a riding activities class. Horses must be ridden with appropriate tack. Tack is not to be changed in any way without permission from the instructor or barn manager.
- No LEC equipment is to leave the Equestrian Center or be stored in student lockers unless it has been signed out for horse show/event use.
- Private students may rec ride for an additional fee. (See "Fees" in Appendix)
