Showing Competing

NOTE: a 2.0 GPA is required in order to show a Lake Erie College horse.

  1. If you wish to compete at an LEC horse show on an LEC horse, you must receive your instructor's permission and sign up for that horse on the recreational riding sheet as well as on the appropriate "Application to Show an LEC Horse" sheet in the office (see #2). This must be a horse assigned to your riding activity class - a horse that you ride regularly. Competing on a school horse is an earned privilege!

  2. The student is required to fill out the appropriate "Application to Show an LEC Horse" requesting the use of a school horse for the show. This application MUST be signed by the instructor and turned in at the Equestrian Center office within 5 days preceding a hunter/jumper horse show, or 3 days before dressage or event entries are due. (See Appendix) The student must also make arrangements to be coached/schooled at the show by his/her instructor. If the instructor is unavailable, s/he will discuss who is to replace him/her as coach/instructor for that competition.

  3. If more than one student wants to show the same horse, the instructor makes the final decision. Decisions will be based on major and class status. Decisions could include:
    1. sharing the horse at one competition
    2. one student shows the horse at one competition, the other student shows at the next competition, and so forth.

  4. The student is required to sign out tack he/she is planning to use for the show. (See "Show Equipment Sign Out Policies") The student is responsible for this equipment while it is in his/her possession.. The equipment must be signed back in with the herd manager, or his/her representative in person when the student has thoroughly cleaned the tack and washed the saddle pads. (Do not put the tack in the barn office and expect it to be automatically must be returned by 10:00 a.m. the Monday) Equipment following the competition. If a student is unable to comply with this policy, s/he will lose the privilege of using college owned property.

  5. The student is to be sure the horse has had water before it is taken from its stall. The horse should have a full bucket of clean water when it is returned to its stall, or be sure the automatic waterer is clean and operating correctly.

  6. The horse MUST BE entered in the show under his registered name, not his barn name. This information is available in the Equestrian Center office.

  7. The student is responsible for clipping, grooming, banding, and braiding his/her horse. Braids and bands MUST be removed before the horse is put back in its stall following the last class of the day. Clipping MUST be supervised by the herd manager.

  8. All horses will be checked for soundness by authorized personnel before entering the show.

  9. The student is responsible for the complete care of the horse s/he shows. This includes proper cool out and grooming following the competition. Failure to do so may result in loss of privileges.

  10. LEC students who are no longer juniors are still required to wear an ASTM/SEI approved helmet with a harness when showing/riding a school horse.

  11. Students currently signed up for a riding activity class may show an LEC horse. These students take priority over community students when selecting a horse. Equine Studies majors take priority over non-majors when selecting a horse. Community/private students may lease a horse to show. See "Fees" in Appendix.

  12. All students who show LEC horses are to be schooled before their class by their instructor, a member of the Equine Studies Faculty, or approved substitute. A coaching (schooling) fee will be assessed for this service. This will be billed to the student's account.

  13. School horses are NOT TO BE WRAPPED following competition without permission of the instructor or herd manager. The instructor or herd manager MUST CHECK the wraps for correct application. The person responsible for wrapping the horse MUST RETURN to the stable the next morning to unwrap the horse and check the condition of the horse’s legs. This is mandatory.

  14. The day after a stressful competition, the rider is expected to hand walk or turn out the horse s\he used in the competition if the horse is not used in classes.
