Tips for International Students

Dorm Life
- We highly recommend that international students live in a dorm to make meeting new people and making friends easier.
- Live with an American roommate and practice your English as much as possible!
- Participate in as many dorm activities as possible!
- If people have their doors open, stop by and introduce yourself!
- If you have any questions, do not hesitate and contact your RD (Resident Director) or RA (Resident Assistant)!
Bank Account
- While your ATM card from your home bank will work here, you should strongly consider opening your own account in the USA.
- The closest bank to Lake Erie College is: National City, 40 West Erie Street, Painesville, OH 44077.
- A checking account is free to open
- There are a number of other banks available with different offers. Ask us forrecommendations.
Social Security Number
- It is recommended that all study abroad students get a US Social Security Number.
- This can be done at 55 West Jackson Street, Painesville, OH 44077
- It opens at 9 am ~ get there early!
- Bring all your documents: I-20, two forms of ID, letter from the college, etc.
Driver’s License
- If you want to buy a car or drive while you are here, you should plan on getting an Ohio
- Driver’s License. This is also very useful to have as an ID card.
- A state ID is also available if you do not wish to drive but wish to have an American ID card.
- Driver’s Licenses and ID cards can be obtained at: The Ohio Bureau of Motor vehicles (BMV), 8830 Mentor Avenue, Mentor, OH 44060 Telephone: 440-974-9000
College Life
- If you have any problems with your classes, contact the Learning Center!
- Form study groups!
- Above all, try and get involved with activities outside of classes!
