General Information

While Wikipedia is a great resource for all sorts of information, please keep in mind that it is always a 'work in progress', and that some articles may get temporarily 'revised' for partisan purposes. Our library has information services that out-perform Wikipedia on many fronts:

World Book Advanced

More than 1.3 million pages of primary source documents, books, documents, selections fully integrated with the encyclopedia content. Research and teaching tools include timelines, citation builder, and saved research. Includes encyclopedia articles, primary source collections, educator tools, student activities, pictures, audio, and video, complemented by current periodicals and related Web sites.

OhioLINK Electronic Book Center

Access a large collection of scholarly and reference e-books covering all academic disciplines.

EBSCO eBook Collection

A library of electronic books (e-books) on many academic subjects. The collection includes thousands of titles purchased by OhioLINK, plus thousands of public-domain e-books.

Oxford Digital Reference Shelf(for off campus access click here)

Full text of over 34 dictionaries and encyclopedias on a variety of subjects, purchased from Oxford University Press.

Current Events

LexisNexis Academic(for off campus access click here)

Provides access to a wide range of news, business, legal, medical, and reference information from nearly 5,000 sources, most of them available in full text. The service covers newspapers, magazines, wire services, federal and state court opinions, federal and state statutes, federal regulations, and SEC filings. News information is updated daily and wire services several times daily.

Provides full text for 185 national (U.S.) and international newspapers, including Christian Science Monitor, USA Today, The Washington Post, The Washington Times, The Times (London), Toronto Star, etc. The database also contains selective full text for 392 regional (U.S.) newspapers. In addition, full-text television & radio news transcripts are provided from CBS News, CNN, CNN International, FOX News, NPR, etc.

TOPICsearch(for off campus accessclick here)

A current events database that allows researchers to explore social, political and economic issues, scientific discoveries and other popular topics discussed in today's classrooms. TOPICsearch contains full text for articles from magazines, newspapers, pamphlets, biographies, book reviews, public opinion polls, EBSCO's Current Issues database, and government information.

Points of View Reference Center(for off campus accessclick here)

Designed to assist researchers in understanding the full scope of controversial subjects. Use Points of View as a guide to debating, developing arguments, writing position papers, and developing critical thinking skills. Each Points of View Essay includes a series of questions and additional material to generate further thought. Also included are thousands of supporting articles from the world's top political and societal publications. The Points of View Debate Blog is a forum for students to express and exchange their unique views on topics in the news.
Biography

Biography Reference Bank(for off campus access click here)

Provides biographical information on approximately half a million people, from antiquity to the present, along with thousands of images. BRB offers substantive narrative profiles, each about 2,000 words long, from H.W. Wilson publications and other respected publishers.

Health Information

Health Source: Consumer Edition(for off campus accessclick here)

A rich collection of consumer health information that features searchable full text for nearly 300 consumer health periodicals, plus indexing and abstracts for over 300 periodicals. Also included is searchable full text for nearly 1,100 health-related pamphlets; 136 health reference books, including books published by the People's Medical Society, and more than 4,500 Clinical Reference Systems reports (in English and Spanish). In addition, this database includes Clinical Pharmacology, which provides access to up-to-date, concise and clinically relevant drug monographs for U.S. prescription drugs, herbal and nutritional supplements, over-the-counter products and new drugs. Health Source provides access to Merriam-Webster's Medical Desk Dictionary.

This is EBSCO's interface designed for the everyday consumer of health care information. CHC provides convenient access to easily understandable health and medical information. Consumers can search and browse within medical encyclopedias, popular reference books, and magazine articles.

This portal to US government Web sites offers users access to all government sites from a single central point.

Statistical Abstract of the United States

Contains 30 sections of statistical data, including population, vital statistics, education, elections, energy, transportation, health and nutrition, and much more.

US Census Bureau

The best source for statistics about just about anything in the United States. Also see the US Census Bureau's Population publications containing specialized studies on household, family, population, etc.

State and County Quick Facts

Quick, easy access to facts about people, business, and geography for each state in the US Also includes Census 2000 data.

World Factbook

From the CIA. This site gives general information about every country in the world. It also includes information about colonies and unpopulated regions.
