The Accounting Major

Degree Awarded
Bachelor of Science

The Accounting major prepares students to become immediately involved with the complex nature of accounting encountered in today's business organizations.

Why choose Accounting at LEC?

  • Small classes with professors who take a personal interest in the success of each student
  • The flexibility provided by an interdisciplinary Liberal Arts education with a strong emphasis on critical thinking
  • The integration of communication and computer skills in the curriculum
  • Internship opportunities that provide first hand experience
  • Opportunities in Accounting

Students graduating with a degree in Accounting have innumerable opportunities in the job market. Students may also wish to continue their accounting education by enrolling in a graduate program in an accounting discipline. Law school and graduate-level study in Business Administration (MBA) are also popular options for which the Lake Erie accounting degree will prepare you very well. Lake Erie College is fully accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

    Accelerated Programs for CPA Candidates

Students are required to have 150 hours of college credit if they wish to sit for the Ohio CPA examination. Lake Erie College offers accounting majors two options to fulfill this requirement. Students may elect to take 22 hours of additional undergraduate coursework approved by the individual's academic advisor. As an alternative, qualified students may apply for early admission to the Lake Erie College MBA program. Admitted students may take MBA courses during their senior year and complete the MBA by taking ten instead of the normally twelve required MBA courses.

All students who wish to sit for the CPA examination will follow an individualized plan under the guidance of their academic advisor.

    International Experiences

Lake Erie College encourages all students to participate in international experiences. Students may wish to spend a semester at one of our "sister" institutions earning credits towards their degree while learning about other peoples and cultures. Other international opportunities for students are Study Tours. Study Tours are two-week trips abroad that students may take during their Junior or Senior year. Most of the cost of the trip is included within the normal tuition.

    Academic Requirements

Completion of a Bachelors Degree requires at least 128 credit hours. All students graduating from Lake Erie College will complete twenty semester hours of basic requirements including courses in Math, English, Computers, Public Speaking, and Foreign Language. These courses are normally completed during the Freshman year.
Students will also complete twenty-four hours of core liberal arts courses. These courses include the subject areas of critical thinking, aesthetic forms, scientific inquiry, cultures and values, sophisticated texts, and social sciences. Each major has course specific requirements, and any remaining credits will be considered as electives.

    Requirements of the Accounting Major

The Accounting Major requires 64 semester hours of course work in the areas of accounting, finance, marketing, economics, and management. A business law class and a management information systems class are also required for the major. Transfer students must complete a minimum of twelve semester hours of Accounting courses at Lake Erie College.
