Hot Streak Helps LEC in National PollRiding a 15-game winning streak is definitely working to the Lake Erie College men's basketball team's advantage as they continue to make the list of the top Division III teams in the nation for the fourth consecutive week.
The Storm appeared in the others receiving votes category in the D3Hoops.com Week 9 Poll that was released today. This time, LEC earned a record-high 30 votes, placing them only 16 votes behind the top 25. The recognition comes on the heels of the team's 18th win of the season last night as Lake Erie defeated non-league opponent Franciscan University 97-72. The Storm is 18-1 overall and in first place in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) with a perfect 12-0 record. Their only loss of the season was to Division II Findlay University, who is currently ranked sixth in the NCAA Division II Poll.
"If we keep playing good basketball and continue to win, we will keep moving up in the poll," said second-year head coach Cliff Hunt. "Right now we can't afford to lose and expect to stay in the rankings like some of the more established programs might be able to do. We just have to take care of business."
Taking care of business entails six regular season conference games within the next 19 days. If Lake Erie's success continues, the Storm can expect to host the Final Four of the AMCC Tournament as they did last season. First round of the tourney kicks off on February 20 with the semifinals on February 23 and the finals on February 24. The top six league teams are eligible to participate, with the winner earning a bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
