Puda named ECAC All-Star
In just one season with the Lake Erie College softball program, freshman third baseman Katie Puda (Euclid, Ohio/Euclid) left her mark in the Storm history books, her latest entry as an East Coast Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III South Region Second-Team All-Star. She was one of 22 players honored from the South Region, becoming the first Storm player to ever be recognized with such an honor.
In her collegiate debut, Puda set Lake Erie’s season record for home runs with 10 and hit .402 with 40 RBIs in 42 games. She had 10 doubles, 37 runs scored and was named Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) and ECAC South Region Player of the Week. She was the conference’s ninth leading hitter and ranked third in slugging percentage and RBIs, fourth in runs and ninth in hits, while leading the AMCC in home runs and total bases. She was named AMCC Second-Team, while also earning 2008 Louisville Slugger National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III All-Central Region Second-Team.
With Puda’s performance this season, Lake Erie earned a second place AMCC standing – the highest in program history. Additionally, the team recorded just its second 20-plus win season and qualified for the ECAC Tournament for only the second time. The Storm won in ECAC First-Round action, 6-4 in nine innings against Alvernia to advance to the four-team double elimination portion of the tournament, which was another first for the program.
The Storm will now move up to NCAA Division II where it will compete independently during the 2008-09 academic year.
