Master Class in Contemporary Dance to be held at Lake Erie College
The Dance Department of Lake Erie College is pleased to announce a master class in contemporary dance with award-winning choreographer Helanius J. Wilkins, artistic director of the Washington D.C. based EDGEWORKS Dance Theater.
The master class will be held from 6:30-8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 25 in the dance studio located in the Royce Hall for the Fine and Performing Arts on the campus of Lake Erie College. This class is offered free with the support of Lake Erie College and the Lake Erie College Dance Department.
In addition, Mr. Wilkins will be in residency at Lake Erie College from Wednesday, February 23 through Sunday, February 27. During this residency, Wilkins will create a new dance which will premier as part of the Lake Erie College Spring Dance concert on April 28 and 29. The rehearsal schedule for this dance will be February 23 and 24 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., February 25 from 4:00 p.m.-6:30 p.m. and 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. on February 26 and 27.
Wilkins,a native of Lafayette, LA., is an award-winning choreographer, performance artist and instructor based in Washington, DC. He is also the founder & artistic director of EDGEWORKS Dance Theater (www.hjwEdgeworks.org). Wilkins is the 2008 recipient of the Pola Nirenska Award for Contemporary Achievement in Dance and was a 2010 finalist for the DC Mayor’s Arts Awards for Outstanding Emerging Artist. He is a 2006 Recipient of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Local Dance Commissioning Project, an award he also received in 2002.
In addition to performing the works of several choreographers, he has enjoyed creating, presenting and receiving commissions for choreography throughout the United States. Wilkins made his international debut as a choreographer and performer in December 2000 at the Dances Forum in Monaco.
Foundations and organizations including The Meredith Foundation, Regional Arts Commission, DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, and the National Endowment for the Arts have supported Wilkins' work. Wilkins is a sought-after instructor who teaches professional and pre-professional dancers as well as students of various ages and levels of skill. He has served as an adjudicator and master teacher at American College Dance Festivals in 2004, 2005, and 2007. He is a former Associate Artistic Director of the Dance Institute of Washington and is currently on faculty at Joy of Motion Dance Center and The Washington Ballet.
