Lake Erie College Receives $1.297 Million Entrepreneurship Grant from Morgan, Kauffman Foundations

(PAINESVILLE, OHIO) – Lake Erie College has been awarded a $1,297,228 five-year challenge grant from The Burton D. Morgan Foundation of Hudson and the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation of Kansas City, Mo., as part of the Northeast Ohio College Entrepreneurship Program. The grant will be utilized to create a culture of entrepreneurship on campus.
Robert Trebar, Dean of Management Studies and Instructor of Business
Administration, said, "This [initiative] represents a great opportunity to make the awareness, spirit and experience of entrepreneurship available to all of Lake Erie College's students, regardless of their major field of study.” He added, “Whether one's interest is poetry or accounting, history or horses, entrepreneurship can provide a way to put your passion to work.”

Trebar believes that the entrepreneurship initiative, named ‘Put Your Passion to Work,’ is also a way to engage the entire Lake Erie College community around a theme that is central to the future of our region. He said, “Entrepreneurship is the engine that can provide the vitality, energy and creativity that is necessary to the future economic and social well-being of Northeast Ohio. Through this generous grant, we plan to develop a base of expertise and a set of resources that will support the creation and growth of new enterprises in the area.”

Four other northeastern Ohio liberal arts colleges – Baldwin-Wallace College, Hiram College, Oberlin College and The College of Wooster – will be sharing more than $6.6 million with Lake Erie College as part of a five-year pilot project.

Deborah D. Hoover, president-elect of the Morgan Foundation, stated, “Exposing all students to entrepreneurial thinking will provide the spark to help them transform a passion into a new venture.” Hoover added that the knowledge gained from implementation on these campuses will be widely disseminated across the country.

Lake Erie College President Michael Victor said, “This is terrific news for our students and the College. We are grateful to The Burton D. Morgan and the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundations for their generosity and innovative approach to promoting entrepreneurship.”

He added, “Lake Erie College is proud to be one of the five colleges in Ohio to receive this recognition and funding.”
‘Put Your Passion to Work’, has a three-fold foundation – faculty and curriculum development, experiential components and mentoring and community and alumni engagement.
The faculty and curriculum development foundation will provide faculty with the resources, knowledge and skills to develop and implement curriculum elements which connect entrepreneurship to the liberal arts.

The base of experiential components and mentoring will give both students and faculty the opportunity to experience the practice and process of entrepreneurship in a variety of real-life contexts.

Finally, the community and alumni engagement aspect of the College’s initiative will develop a network of support resources and series of events that link Lake Erie College’s alumni, students, faculty and staff to entrepreneurs in the region. This will help foster the growth of new enterprises while providing new learning opportunities for all involved.

The College will need to secure more than $600,000 in contributions over the next five years to secure the entire challenge grant. The grant represents the largest foundation grant awarded in the history of Lake Erie College.

Founded in 1856, Lake Erie College is a dynamic and progressive institution of higher education.
