Lake Erie College and CARES sponsor 2nd annual Seuss-a-Thon

Lake Erie College and CARES Literacy Coalition are teaming up to sponsor the 2nd annual Seuss-a-Thon to celebrate the birthday of beloved children’s book author Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss. The event will take place March 1 from 1:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m. at the St. Mary Church Family Center in Painesville.

Lake Erie College student, faculty and staff volunteers will read Seuss stories and Robin Echols Cooper will be performing music and dramatic interpretation of Seuss stories.

Each child will receive a free book and Dr. Seuss hat with chances to win free raffle prizes. Children will also complete a Seuss passport. Opportunities to take photos with the Cat in the Hat will also be available.

Geisel wrote and illustrated 44 children's books, including such all-time favorites as “Green Eggs and Ham,” “Oh, the Places You'll Go,” “Fox in Socks” and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” His books have been translated into more than 15 languages and more than 200 million copies have been sold.

Besides the books, his works have provided the source for eleven children's television specials, a Broadway musical and a feature-length motion picture. His honors included two Academy awards, two Emmy awards, a Peabody award and the Pulitzer Prize.

CARES Literacy Coalition creates a community-wide awareness of literacy issues, programs and services. The coalition also conducts campaigns to recruit potential volunteers and adult students. In addition, CARES promotes collaboration sharing and cooperation between all adult basic and literacy education providers. Auburn Career Center serves as the fiscal agent for CARES.

Seuss-a-Thon is free and open to the public. Families of all ages are welcomed and encouraged to wear pajamas. For more information, contact Katharine Delavan, Ph.D., assistant professor of early childhood education, at 440.375.7167 or kdelavan@lec.edu.
