President Charles E.P. Simmons, Ph.D.
1931 - 2009

The College is saddened to report the passing of Dr. Charles E.P. Simmons who served as president of Lake Erie from 1977 – 1984.  He died on August 4, 2009.

Simmons received his B.A. from Seattle University in 1960 and a M.A. from Drake University the same year. He went on to earn a Ph.D. in South American Religion in 1965 from Washington State University, completed post doctoral studies at Dalhousie in Canada and then began a long and distinguished career in Academe. He served as a professor of history at The University of Idaho, history department chair at Bradley, dean of the faculty at the University of Minnesota and vice president at Evansville University before being named the seventh president of Lake Erie College.
 
After leaving Lake Erie, Simmons joined the faculty at Midland College in Midland, Texas where he taught courses in American history and government from 1985 until his retirement in 1997. He was named a Sesquicentennial Fellow by Lake Erie College during commencement 2006, when he was present to accept the award. 
 
Simmons is survived by his wife, Peggy, seven children, three sisters and nine grandchildren.
