Lake Erie Student Participates in Unique Internship in Perugia, Italy
Aliana Ferenczi, recent Lake Erie graduate and Italian Studies and International Business major spent the Fall 2012 semester participating in a semester abroad in Perugia, Italy. While taking classes in Perugia at the Umbra Institute, she also completed a semester-long internship.
For three and a half months, she worked at Monimbo, a store emphasizing Fair Trade. While there she not only helped with the day-to-day workings of the store, but she also translated promotional material for the store which was placed on several websites. She collaborated in creating promotional video for the store for use on their website and to recruit potential future interns. Finally, she was selected to attend the Altrocioccolato.
The Altrocioccolato, a three day festival held annually in Perugia, is a world-renown traditional Italian fair focusing on chocolate and Fair Trade. Representing the store, Aliana was able to help price items, create promotional displays and inform people what the fair and Fair Trade stand for. She learned that Fair Trade is more concerned with promoting the importance of the social movement and justice and equality for consumers and business owners, rather than just meeting a sales quota.
Finally, Aliana was selected as the only student from the Umbra Institute to be interviewed at the Instituto Tedesco Perugia, by an Italian journalist about her time abroad, her perspective as an American student overseas and her internship. The interview was conducted in front of more than 50 professionals and intellectuals, was done all in Italian, and was not what she expected; nonetheless, she received a huge round of applause at the end of the interview.
