The
Biology Major
Biology
Degree Awarded
Bachelor of Science
The major in Biology prepares students for employment in
research or industry, for continuing graduate studies, or
for admittance to medical, dental or veterinary school.
Students should realize that many career opportunities in
Biology require graduate training and they should plan their
college education with that in mind. Planning is especially
important for students who wish to go on to a professional
school. These students should seek advice from the pre-professional
advisors as soon as possible so that their course selections
may be planned to meet prerequisites for admission to the
schools of their choice.

Opportunities in Biology
If you bring a sense of wonder to the workings of the natural
world, if your curiosity can only be satisfied through the
discovery associated with research, then you have many traits
in common with Lake Erie College students who choose biology
as a major. Our students actively pursue interests that
range from the microscopic to the ecosystemic. Since our
curriculum is challenging, many of our students use the
biology major as a door to careers in medicine or research.
International Experiences
Lake Erie College encourages all students to participate
in international experiences. Students may wish to spend
a semester at one of our sister institutions,
earning credits towards their degree while learning about
other peoples and cultures.
Other international opportunities for students are Study
Tours. Study Tours are two-week trips that full-
time students may take their Junior or Senior year. Most
of the cost of the trip is included within tuition.
Academic Requirements
A Bachelors degree requires at least 128 credit hours. All
students graduating from Lake Erie College will complete
20 semester hours of basic requirements including courses
in Math, English, Computers, Public Speaking, and Foreign
Language. These courses are normally completed during the
Freshman year.
Students will also complete 24 hours of core liberal arts
courses. These courses include the subject areas of critical
thinking, aesthetic forms, scientific inquiry, cultures
and values, sophisticated texts, and social sciences. Each
major has course specific requirements, and any remaining
credits will be considered as electives.
Requirements of the Biology Major
The Biology major requires 58 semester hours of course work
in the areas of botany, chemistry, physics, genetics and
anatomy. A senior research project and at least 2 semester
hours of Biology Seminar are also required.
Additionally, every student has an Admissions Counselor
at LEC that can answer questions about our academic programs.
Admissions can be reached at 1-800-916-0904. Please call
