The Pre-Health Professions Major (Medical, Veterinary, Dental, Pharmaceutical)
Degree Awarded
Bachelor of Science

The major in Pre-Health Professions prepares students for admittance to medical, pharmacy, dental or veterinary school and future careers in these fields. Students enrolled in this program will take biology, chemistry and math courses in their first year and will then meet with a faculty member of Pre-Health Professions Committee to determine their future eligibility and advisement in the program. Those who continue in the program will enjoy a unique mentoring program to assist them in achieving acceptance at the future graduate program of their choice.

Our Unique Program

  • The opportunity to choose elective courses to tailor a program of study that fits personal career goals
  • Internship opportunities that provide first hand experience
  • New curriculum design and computer facilities funded by the National Science Foundation
  • A very high acceptance rate among students who apply to medical, veterinary, and graduate schools after graduation

Opportunities in Pre-Health

Lake Erie College's pre-health professions major prepares students for careers relating to the healthcare field such as laboratory work, teaching, or chemical sales, as well as careers that require an advanced degree such as medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, or Ph.D. level research.

International Experiences

Lake Erie College encourages all students to participate in international experiences. Students may wish to spend a semester at one of our "sister" institutions, earning credits towards their degree while learning about other peoples and cultures. Other international opportunities for students are Study Tours. Study Tours are two-week trips that full-time students may take their Junior or Senior year. Most of the cost of the trip is included within tuition.

Academic Requirements

A Bachelors degree requires at least 128 credit hours. All students graduating from Lake Erie College will complete 20 semester hours of basic requirements including courses in Math, English, Computers, Public Speaking, and Foreign Language. These courses are normally completed during the Freshman year.

Students will also complete 24 hours of core liberal arts courses. These courses include the subject areas of critical thinking, aesthetic forms, scientific inquiry, cultures and values, sophisticated texts, and social sciences. Each major has course specific requirements, and any remaining credits will be considered as electives.

Requirements of the Pre-Health Professions Major

The Pre-Health professions major requires 59 semester hours of course work in the areas of chemistry, physics, mathematics and biology. These required courses are those typically required for admission to professional programs. Consultations with advisors and the Pre-Health Professions Committee is also required.

Additionally, every student has an Admissions Counselor at LEC that can answer questions about our academic programs. Admissions can be reached at 1-800-916-0904. Please call to visit our campus and meet with a biology professor.
