Address Correction Endorsements

Dear LEC Bulk Mailers,
I was asked to send a brief explanation about the importance of using the correct “address correction” notification on pieces sent out by bulk (or standard) mail. In the simplest terms, there are 4 different endorsements that could potentially be printed on your piece of mail that provide instruction to the Post Office on how to handle your undeliverable pieces. Because there is a fee attached to each different endorsement, it is very important that you know ahead of time which endorsement is proper for your mailing. For instance, the Alumni Department might want to know change of addresses of our alums to update their database, where another department might simply want to send random information to a large group and not necessarily need corrected address notification. Either way, I’ve included a description of each endorsement and the fee attached so you know how to label your mail.
Address Service Requested: For 1 year from the time a person moves, the mailpiece will be forwarded and a separate notice of the new address will be provided to us at a fee of .70. For months 13 – 18 (from the time of the move) the mailpiece will be returned to us with the new address attached; however, a weighted fee will be charged. Basically, it is .37 x 2.472 or .92 each. After 18 months, the mailpiece will be returned with the reason for nondelivery only plus the .92 weighted fee. (According to the Post Office, this service is the most expensive.)
Return Service Requested: The mailpiece will be returned to us with the corrected address or reason for nondelivery. The fee for this is the appropriate single-piece First-Class Mail charge. (Most often, .37 for a regular, one-ounce envelope or .23 for a postcard.)
**This particular service has been recommended by the Painesville Post Office as the best one for us in most cases.
Change Service Requested: The mailpiece will not be forwarded but we will receive new address notification or reason for the nondelivery at a charge of .70 each. The mailpiece will be disposed of by the USPS. (I was told this service might be appropriate for a bank or credit card company that might not want to leave a new credit card at the wrong house.)
Forwarding Service Requested: For 1 year from the time a person moves, the mailpiece will be forwarded at no charge. For months 13 – 18 (from the time of the move), the mailpiece will be returned to us with the new address attached plus a weighted fee of .92 (.37 x 2.472). After 18 months, the mailpiece will be returned with the reason for nondelivery only plus the .92 weighted fee.
No Endorsement: Mailpiece will be disposed of by the USPS.
I know this is a lot of information and as always, you are welcome to call me or the Post Office if you have any questions before you send your piece off to the printer. Thanks again for your time.
Joyce
