In 1918, the delegates from four organizations met together, representing The Ohio State University, Swarthmore College, The University of Michigan, and Cornell University. They founded the first and only national honor society for senior women. "Mortar Board" was chosen in preference to a Greek-letter name. In 1975, membership was extended to include men. Mortar Board is a national organization and has 226 chapters throughout the nation, with approximately a quarter of a million members. (www.mortarboard.org)
Through the years, Lake Erie College has had three honor societies for those students with high academic and leadership achievements. These have included Kappa Alpha Sigma, established in 1926, the Laurel Society in 1964 and Mortar Board in 1975. Since the installation of Mortar Board at Lake Erie College, its members have upheld the three pillars of the society: scholarship, leadership and service, through a variety of activities and projects both on and off campus.
This year’s chapter participated in activities such as First-Book, a national reading initiative, and undertook various fund-raising endeavors. Most recently, the group raised close to $1,400 to support a local family in need.
