Safety and Security
General Information
The security of the Lake Erie College campus and all who live and work here is the responsibility of every member of the College community. A conscious effort must be made by each student, faculty, and staff member to ensure the safety and well being of persons and property. Anyone observing a suspicious person or act should report the situation immediately to Campus Safety and Security at 440.375.7575; or the Painesville Police Department at 911 for emergencies or 9.352.3535 for non-emergencies; or to a responsible administrative or staff member.
Lost and Found/Escort Service
Campus Safety and Security maintains a lost and found department as well as providing escort service to all members of the College community who are traveling between buildings or to the parking lots, particularly during non-business hours. An escort is obtained by calling 440.375.7575.
Safety Precautions
While the Lake Erie College campus is generally a safe one, it is prudent to heed the following:
- Do not walk alone at night; use the campus escort service or travel in groups.
- Do not leave residence hall rooms or offices unlocked and unattended. If you will not be in your room, lock the door and take your purse and/or keys with you.
- Lock your car doors; look inside your car before entering. If possible, look underneath the car.
- Keep all doors to the residence halls, including the fire escape doors, closed tightly at all times (do not prop doors).
- Do not admit people you do not know into the residence hall. Guests should call the resident they are visiting and then wait to be escorted through the building.
- Be aware of your surroundings and watch for suspicious persons.
- Learn safety techniques and where to find campus phones in case of an emergency. Call 440.375.7575 if anything looks unusual or suspicious to you.
- Follow your instincts. If someone makes you feel uncomfortable, call security. Better safe than sorry. This is not about if you are right or wrong, it's about your safety.
Parking on Campus
Any student who brings a vehicle onto the campus is required to register that vehicle and obtain a sticker that must be displayed at all times. In order to register the vehicle, the student must complete a form that includes the license plate number, make and color of the vehicle. The first registration hangtag is provided to the student at no cost; replacement tags are issued at a cost of $50. Automobile registration is handled with Safety and Security 440.375.7575, which is located in the lower level of the Holden Center.
Residential students are permitted one personal vehicle on campus. Recreational vehicles and/or trailers cannot be parked on campus. Residential students provide the Security Department with additional information such as their residence hall, room number, and campus telephone number.
All students must observe the parking signs and parking restrictions. Commuting and residential students are assigned to a specific parking lot by Campus Security. No student may park in front of College Hall or the lower Holden Center lot. Parking violations will result in fines and/or a towed vehicle.
Students are required to inform the Security Department if their sticker is missing, if they change their vehicle or their license plate number.
