Artist in Residence Program

Lake Erie College is pleased to announce that the internationally acclaimed jazz pianist Joe Augustine will renew his position as Artist-in-Residence with the College's Fine Arts Program and the Department of Music.  Joe is a leading exemplar of jazz piano and has performed in a wide variety of musical settings from the concert stage to jazz clubs. During his career, Augustine has received copious honors, including selection to the roster of Steinway artists in 1994 – a lifelong honor and one which places him on an exclusive list among other jazz pianists like Diana Krall and alongside immortals such as Cole Porter and Irving Berlin. Joe is a full-time faculty member at the University of Akron’s School of Music Jazz Studies Program and has been teaching the special intellectual community at UA’s Williams Honor College for the past eight years. Joe has composed, produced and recorded more than 35 CDs that have been released both nationally and abroad.

Through the artist-in-residence program, Joe has committed to being on the Lake Erie College campus during the academic semester to offer his highly praised Master Classes.  Joe’s training, experience, and inventive musical style will transcend the learning experience of Lake Erie College students regardless of their chosen vocations or career paths. Joe has lectured extensively at universities and colleges and will bring his signature style to the Master Class lectures at Lake Erie College. Augustine’s Master Class lectures cover subjects such as “Anxiety and Performance,”Music as a Business,” “Harmony and Creative Song Writing,” and “The Art of Improvisation.” These topics are discussed in depth and tailored to his student audience. Joe will be delivering a Master Class lecture at Lake Erie College on Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. in the Helen Rockwell Morley Memorial Music Building.  The Master Class lecture is for the benefit of Lake Erie College students who will join Augustine in an intimate setting on the Morley stage; however, anyone is welcome to attend the class as an audience observer.

New to the artist-in-residence program this year, the Joe Augustine Trio will be a featured performance as part of the Lake Erie College 2017 Performing Arts Series. The performing arts series will serve as a catalyst to engage the greater Painesville area and contiguous counties through exposure and accessibility to the arts.

The artist-in-residence program at Lake Erie College is supported through private philanthropy. This year, an anonymous donor has offered to match all gifts made in support of the artist-in-residence program, up to $2,500.00 through December 1, 2016.  Lake Erie College recognizes the important effect an artist-in-residence program can have on both students and community because of the desire to re-connect art and artist with the social environment.  This collaboration – between College, donor and artist – promises to greatly benefit our students, enrich the arts environment on campus and draw attention to our growing fine arts programs.
