Anna Lowell, Class of 2018, Equine Teacher/Trainer & Business Administration
If the first thing you think of when you hear "Monsters Inc." is a horse, you may have met LEC student Anna Lowell. Anna and her horse, fondly known as Monty, are part of the equine studies family here are the College.
Originally from Streamwood, Ill., Anna is pursuing a dual bachelor's degree with majors in equine teacher/trainer and business administration. She also serves as an officer on the College's IHSA English Hunt Seat team.
One of Anna's favorite aspects of LEC is the friendly faculty who make her feel at home and who have helped her and Monty improve as a team. "Monty is in the best shape he has ever been in," said Anna. "In working with my coach, we have perfected old challenges, set new goals and have even shown at several A/AA rated shows in Ohio and Illinois."
Apart from her work with Monty, Anna's involvement on the IHSA team has been a particularly rewarding experience. "Being on the team is such a great opportunity because, not only do you make friends who you can call family, but you learn a lot about yourself and riding in general," she said. "In practice you are always working harder than you would at shows and you are on a different horse each week. It's great training because it makes you a better rider and shows your ability to be versatile."
Ultimately, Anna hopes to open her own training facility for horses and riders following graduation. She advises anyone interested in studying equine studies at LEC to get involved. "Not only do you get to advance your riding skills, but you learn how to overcome challenges and to think critically," she said. "Plus, it's a lot of fun and you make great friends!"
