Attorney and author Sidney Powell to present at Lake Erie College

Attorney and author Sidney Powell will present a lecture titled "The Current State of Justice” at Lake Erie College on Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 7:00 p.m. in the Helen Rockwell Morley Memorial Music Building. This event is free and open to the public, but registration is required. Register online at

Powell has been lead counsel in more than 500 federal appeals resulting in more than 180 published decisions. She has represented clients in complex federal appeals and consults in complex federal litigation in civil and selective criminal cases. She has taught appellate and trial advocacy for the United States Department of Justice, and spoken on many legal topics for the Federal Bar, the ABA, the Texas Bar, the Fifth Circuit Bar, and countless civic organizations. She speaks widely across the country now on topics in current legal events from her news-breaking articles for the New York Observer, and on issues of over-criminalization, prosecutorial misconduct, and criminal justice reform, including to the Fifth and Ninth Circuit Judicial Conferences, law schools, legal and civic organizations. Her Book TV presentation with Judge Alex Kozinski at the CATO Institute has been viewed thousands of times. She has appeared often as a legal commentator for NewsMaxTV, and on Fox.

Powell is the author of "LICENSED TO LIE: Exposing Corruption in the Department of Justice.” Although LICENSED TO LIE reads like a legal thriller, and has 5-stars on Amazon, the book is the non-fiction, inside story of high profile litigation of the last decade, including the prosecutions of Arthur Andersen LLP, Enron, Merrill Lynch executives, Senator Ted Stevens, and others. Described as a strong page-turner—even in non-legal reviews—the book uses actual dialogue from hearings, trials and appellate arguments, including several in the Supreme Court. Those who have read it, including "fabled trial lawyer Brendan V. Sullivan Jr.” Williams & Connolly LLP., have said it should be required reading for every lawyer, law student, and college student in the country. John Stossel did a special feature on the book.

Powell is an elected member of the American Law Institute and a Fellow of the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers for which she served in 2001-2002 as President. She has long been a member of the Board of Governors of the Fifth Circuit Bar Association for which she also served as President. She was the Editor of the Fifth Circuit Reporter for 20 years and program director for the annual appellate practice conference.

A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of North Carolina, where she also attended law school, Powell was the youngest Assistant United States Attorney in the country when she began with the United States Attorney’s Office in the Western District of Texas. She later chaired its Appellate Section. Thereafter, she began an Appellate Section for the Northern District of Texas. She also served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia where she obtained the conviction of a local attorney for bankruptcy fraud.

A book signing will take place in the Arthur S. Holden Center following the lecture on Oct. 13. Lake Erie College students may purchase Powell’s book for $20; the cost for all others is $28.95. Books may also be ordered in advance and more information is available at
