Business and marketing major Brian Bullock ’18 scores job offer from Cincinnati company


This summer, senior Brian Bullock ’18 gained valuable experiences hauling his weight as a ferrous brokerage intern at The David J. Joseph Company.

Face to face sales? Check. Bankable work? Check. Cinching the competitive bid for post-internship employment? Without a doubt.

The 21-year-old Loveland, Ohio native interned at the company’s Cincinnati headquarters, though his summer placement afforded travel to various cities, such as Louisville, Pittsburgh, Columbus and Fort Wayne. His first internship was more than an all-inclusive tour of the business world: it was his pathway to full-time career success.

“My superiors made it evident that I would be doing work that will directly benefit the company, potentially bringing in profits,” said Bullock, who accepted a job offer from The David J. Joseph Company, where he will work after graduation. “Also, they had hired at least one person each year from their internship program.”

Founded in 1885, The David J. Joseph Company is a global leader in scrap metal brokerage and recycling with over $2 billion in assets, according to their website.

Bullock considers himself a go-getter, having joined the Storm to advance his baseball pitching career. This mentality has served him well within the College’s small, private atmosphere, where he is a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. A Dean’s List honoree, he was also named to the 2016 GLIAC All-Academic Team.

Away from LEC, Bullock’s internship pushed him to take initiative in a business environment. Building and maintaining professional rapport with buyers and sellers was chief among the valuable lessons he learned at The David J. Joseph Company.

“I had to make phone calls to customers to develop a relationship as a ‘new broker.’ When it came to discussing the product and pricing, the customer oftentimes was more intrigued,” Bullock said. “If I was able to gain the respect of the supplier and put a quality product on the table for a competitive price, the customers were interested.”

Intent on someday becoming a vice president of sales, the double-major in business and marketing utilized a personal connection within the company and toughed out the interview process. In his brokerage role, he learned how the steel and scrap metal markets function, a task he prepared to do in marketing classes at Lake Erie College.

“The brokers who were my mentors at the company were extremely impressive, and I spent every day observing and trying to implement the way they do business,” he said. Continuing, he added, “I am driven to be better than I was the day before in everything I do.”
