Since graduating in 2007, Lake Erie College alumnus Dan Purcell has taken his talents all the way from the Storm basketball court to the front office of an NBA franchise.
Soon, Purcell will have another accolade to add to his list. During this year’s homecoming weekend, the National Alumni Board (NAB) of LEC will present the former student-athlete with the College’s esteemed Young Alumni Award, an honor reserved for alumni with outstanding career achievements who have graduated within the past 10 years.
Originally from Burton, Ohio, Purcell, 33, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration and a Bachelor of Science degree in social science from LEC, where he played basketball for four years under former head coach Cliff Hunt. Additionally, he served as president of the business club and a member of the student government, extracurricular activities that added to his all-around success.
Now, Purcell serves as the Basketball Operations Manager for the New Orleans Pelicans, the type of position for which he strove from the start. He credits his college experiences for providing the type of solid foundation that made his NBA dreams feasible.
“Lake Erie College not only provided me with an invaluable education and an opportunity to play collegiate basketball at a high level, but it also gave me the foundation that has shaped me into the person I am today,” said Purcell. “The experiences and memories from my time at Lake Erie are ones that I’ll cherish forever.”
In tune with the NAB’s recognition of Purcell, his employer applauds the LEC grad for his excellence in his job.
“Dan exemplifies the quality traits of a young professional that you want in your organization,” stated Pelicans General Manager Dell Demps. “He’s been a tremendous asset to our team and has a really bright career ahead of him. I’m proud to hear that he’s being recognized with this prestigious award for the outstanding contributions he’s made to Lake Erie College and look forward to seeing what the future holds for him.”
JD Ingalls ’12, MBA ’13, financial advisor at Wells Fargo and chair of the Young Alumni Award, notes Purcell was the clear choice to receive this year’s recognition.
“Dan has shown great success throughout his career and left a lasting impression during his time at Lake Erie College,” said Ingalls. “He is the exemplification of someone we want representing the College.”
Of receiving this award, Purcell says he feels honored. “I’m deeply touched and sincerely grateful to be named this year’s Young Alumni Award Recipient. To be included among the distinguished past winners is a tremendous honor,” he said. “I’m extremely thankful to the alumni, faculty and staff of my alma mater for this incredible recognition.”
The National Alumni Board of Lake Erie College selects recipients of the Young Alumni Award from recommendations submitted by alumni, faculty, staff, and friends of the College. For more information on this honor, contact JD Ingalls, chair of the award, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
