This spring, Lake Erie College launched the inaugural Dawn Powell Prize in Creative Writing, a competition geared to students enrolled at LEC, greater Cleveland high schools and area community colleges.
More than 40 students submitted original works of poetry or fiction. The winners and runners-up in several categories will be honored at an Awards Reception on Thursday, April 20 where over $400 in prizes will be awarded. The reception will take place at 5:00 p.m. in Coe Conference Room in the Arthur S. Holden Center on campus and is open to the public.
The event, which is open to all, will include student readings, light refreshments and the granting of awards. Readings will include poetry and fiction pieces submitted by students and faculty members. No RSVP is required.
The award’s namesake, author Dawn Powell, attended Lake Erie College from 1914-1918 and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. During her time at Lake Erie, Powell edited and wrote for the College’s literary publication and was active in theater. By the time of her death in 1965, she had written 16 novels, nine plays and numerous short stories.
Powell, who was posthumously inducted into the New York State Writers Hall of Fame, attended Lake Erie College from 1914-1918 and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. During her time at Lake Erie, she edited and wrote for the College’s literary publication and was active in theater.
After graduation, Powell moved to New York City, where she settled in Greenwich Village and became immersed in the bohemian culture of this famous neighborhood. Despite many tragedies during her life, she wrote 16 novels, nine plays and numerous short stories and reviews, with her work enjoying a rebirth in recent years. She was also awarded an honorary Doctor of Literature degree from Lake Erie College 56 years ago this June.
The competition was coordinated by Dr. Adam Stier, assistant professor of English in the School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.
"This is the inaugural year for the Dawn Powell Prize in Creative Writing, and so far I’ve been thrilled to see the level of response from our faculty and, especially, from our student contributors. There’s a lot of creative energy on this campus, and it deserves recognition. The Awards Reception on April 20 is a wonderful opportunity to honor Lake Erie College’s rich literary history—namely in the work of Dawn Powell—and, even more importantly, to celebrate the outstanding fiction and poetry being written by current Lake Erie College students and other aspiring writers in our local community."
