Director of Student Life & New Student Orientation | REPORTS TO: EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF STUDENT AFFAIRS & TITLE IX COORDINATOR

STATUS: FULL-TIME, EXEMPT, SALARIED Lake Erie College, a small, co-educational, four-year, independent liberal arts college located in Painesville, OH, 30 miles east of Cleveland, invites applications for the full-time position of director of student life and new student orientation.

The director of student life and new student orientation is responsible for, but not limited to, creating a positive experience for all students through programming, leadership opportunities and developmental meetings. With a focus on retention, the DSL will serve as a role model to students and foster an environment that produces successful individuals post-graduation. The DSL is responsible for providing management and evaluation for the residence life staff, housing administration, student engagement and student conduct. The DSL facilitates programming evaluation of policies and procedures to encourage a safe and healthy environment for all students.  

This position serves as a liaison to other departments and will directly oversee the assistant directors of student life and engagement/housing. While reporting directly to the executive director of student affairs & title IX coordinator, this position must have a close working relationship with the director of career services, director of security, director of the accessibility support and counseling services, Academic Advising, Alumni Relations, Physical Plant, Bursar, Financial Aid and Athletics. This position is an equal partner in the strategy to assure the highest quality of student experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists EDSA in providing vision, leadership and strategic direction of student services including: residence life, student conduct, security, crisis response, accessibility support and counseling services, new student orientation and student engagement. Directly supervises professionals and graduate students within the Student Life Office (residence life, activities).

  • Adjudicates student conduct violations and participates in the campus conduct process. Provides crisis intervention and assessment for students in need. Assists students with personal and emotional concerns, making appropriate referrals, if necessary.

  • Oversees the residence life and housing process and supervises the assistant director of student life and housing and indirectly, the resident directors and resident assistants. Monitors off-campus exemption process with assistant director of student life and housing.

  • Supervises the assistant director of student life and engagement and monitors student activities programming and leadership roles. Assists with the implementation of the Student Affairs Survey and evaluation process in fall and spring.

  • Initiates programs designed to build an inclusive environment.

  • Facilitates new student orientation sessions for summer, fall and spring. Advises student organizations including, but not limited to, Student Government Association

  • Monitors the Student Life Office social media sites.

  • Develops and monitors Student Life budget areas, including residence life and student activities.

  • Assist Security with maintaining and preparing campus crime statistics and reporting. '

  • Works collaboratively with campus departments on issues, planning and projects.

  • Represents the College on necessary community coalitions and consortiums.

  • Other duties as assigned by the EDSA or senior vice president for academic affairs and institutional effectiveness.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in higher education or a related field required.

  • Five – seven years of professional experience in a college environment.

  • Significant experience with college student leadership development and large-scale event planning.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to work non-traditional hours, including late night and weekends.

  • Enthusiasm and willingness to develop, initiate, and actively participate in developmental student programming.

  • Commitment to work and educate inclusively with a diverse student population, including a large number of student-athletes.

  • Sound administrative and supervisory skills.

  • Characteristics of successful individuals who have served in this position – solution-oriented, detail-oriented, patient, persistent, flexible, curious, caring, comfortable with being uncomfortable.
