On International Darwin Day, Lake Erie College’s School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics will present a single screening of “FOOD EVOLUTION,” a 2016 documentary film that digs into the relevant controversy, science and history of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), accompanied by a panel.
The film will run for approximately 92 minutes in Dickinson Lecture Hall, located in Austin Hall of Science on the Lake Erie College campus on Monday, February 12, 2018 at 7 p.m.
Following the film, a panel of experts will hold a discussion. Panelists include Associate Professor of Biology Deborah Schulman, PhD; Dean of the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and Associate Professor of Chemistry Johnathan Tedesco, PhD; Associate Professor of Biology Zane Johnson, PhD; and special guest Sujata Lakhe Barnard, who holds an MSc in botany and an MS in molecular biology.
Narrated by esteemed science communicator Neil deGrasse Tyson, “FOOD EVOLUTION” explores polarizing debates around the use of genetically modified crops to feed skyrocketing global populations. Academy Award®-nominated director Scott Hamilton Kennedy (The Garden, Fame High, OT: Our Town) travels from papaya groves in Hawaii to banana farms in Uganda to the cornfields of Iowa, interviewing scientists and farmers to make sense of the passion, suspicion and confusion.
Kennedy stated, “In a time of ‘alternative facts’ that led The New York Times journalist David Brooks to write, ‘This is no longer a country in which everybody experiences the same reality,’ we feel FOOD EVOLUTION has something important to add to the conversation. And when journalism and science – the very institutions that are supposed to help us determine fact from fiction and truth from spin – are under existential attack for being ‘fake news,’ we hope FOOD EVOLUTION might help people to become better informed and prepare themselves to make the best choices they can.”
The film enlists experts such as Mark Lynas, Michael Pollan, Alison Van Eenennaam, Jeffrey Smith, Andrew Kimbrell, Vandana Shiva, Robert Fraley, Marion Nestle and Bill Nye.
Of the film, LA Weekly contributor and film critic Serena Donadoni wrote, “What Scott Hamilton Kennedy captures in his scrupulous, optimistic documentary Food Evolution is the new reality for American scientists: the challenge of reaching a public bombarded by conspiracy theories and fearmongering.”
