On Friday, May 5, 2017, Lake Erie College will celebrate its graduate level commencement ceremony in the Helen Rockwell Morley Memorial Music Building. The ceremony will take place at 7:00 p.m. as 62 graduate students receive their degrees.
The graduates will be addressed by Dr. Robert J. Trebar, Dean of the School of Business and professor of business administration, who joined Lake Erie College in 2004. In addition to his leadership responsibilities, Dr. Trebar teaches graduate courses in the area of business strategy and a freshman course, “The Pursuit of Happiness,” which he developed for the College’s Business and Entrepreneurship Learning Community.
During his time as dean, the number of academic majors offered by the School of Business has increased from two to nine and MBA enrollment has quadrupled and expanded to multiple locations. In 2006, Trebar authored a grant awarded by the Burton D. Morgan Foundation and Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation which led to the establishment of the Lake Erie College Center for Entrepreneurship. It remains the largest foundation grant in the College’s history.
In the past year, Dr. Trebar was awarded a grant from the Charles E. Koch Foundation to support new course development and student scholarships. In 2007, he was named “Distinguished Sales and Marketing Executive of the Year” by the Sales and Marketing Executives Association. He is only one of two educators to receive the award in its 57-year history.
Before coming to Lake Erie College, Dr. Trebar held a number of leadership and staff positions in the business world. Much of his 25-year career was spent in the medical technology industry, most recently serving as the Senior Vice President of Marketing and Sales at Biomec, Inc., a start-up venture specializing in emerging diagnostic and therapeutic technologies. Prior to that, he was the Vice President of Marketing for Philips Medical Systems, a global leader in the medical imaging industry. Earlier in his career, Dr. Trebar held a number of positions with British Petroleum Ltd. and Brush Wellman, Inc. in the areas of finance, marketing, strategic planning, and mergers and acquisitions. He has taught as an adjunct instructor at a number of Ohio colleges and universities.
Dr. Trebar has appeared before sub-committees of the US House of Representatives regarding the marketing of medical devices and pharmaceuticals. He consults with organizations globally on the subject of business unit and corporate-level strategy, with clients ranging from Johnson & Johnson to the Cornell University School of Medicine. He has served as an advisor to the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Slovenia on the topic of entrepreneurship education and has conducted entrepreneurship seminars for the Ohio Department of Development.
Dr. Trebar holds a B.A. in economics from John Carroll University, an MBA from Case Western Reserve University and a Ph.D in Higher Education Administration and Policy from the University of Toledo where he was named a Russell Scholar. He has published and presented widely on his primary research interest, the influence of the college experience on the entrepreneurial attributes of students.
Dr. Trebar is a member of the Cleveland Business Leaders Committee and the Education Committee of the Cleveland City Club. He has served on a number of for-profit and non-profit boards. Among his interests are music of all types, long walks, debate, C-SPAN and his beloved Cleveland Indians. A native Clevelander, Dr. Trebar lives in Highland Heights with his dear partner, Renee.
