Lake Erie College will celebrate its 159th commencement on Saturday, Dec. 12, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. The event will take place in the Helen Rockwell Morley Memorial Music Building.
Of the 69 students graduating this December, there are 24 graduate students and 45 undergraduates.
The graduates will be addressed by Steven A. Minter, former president and executive director of the Cleveland Foundation, where he served from 1984 through his retirement in 2003. Minter holds a master’s degree in social administration from the Mandel School at Case Western Reserve University and a bachelor’s degree in education from Baldwin-Wallace College.
Established in 1914, the Cleveland Foundation is a charitable organization working toward the greater good of the Cleveland community. For nearly 20 years, Minter oversaw the organization’s work and had an undeniable and far-reaching impact on the Greater Cleveland area. In addition to his renowned work with the Cleveland Foundation, Minter spent over 15 years in governmental positions, including undersecretary for the U.S. Department of Education during President Carter’s administration, commissioner of public welfare for the commonwealth of Massachusetts from 1970-1975, and roles ranging from caseworker up to director of the Cuyahoga County Welfare.
Minter is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the 2003 Distinguished Grantmaker Award presented by the Council on Foundations and the 1991 Ohio Governor’s Award for Excellence in Education.
Currently, Minter is an executive-in-residence at Cleveland State University’s Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs and a fellow in the University’s Center for Nonprofit Policy and Practice. He remains a chairman of Cuyahoga Arts and Culture and is an advisor to Neighborhood Progress Inc., a Cleveland neighborhood revitalization group.
Minter has expertise in areas such as the building of partnerships between the public and private sector, nonprofit leadership and management, community building and more.
