Lake Erie College to celebrate 161st commencement

Elizabeth Abraham ’68 to deliver commencement address

Lake Erie College will celebrate its 161st commencement on Sunday, May 7, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. The event will take place in the Jerome T. Osborne Family Athletic & Wellness Center, where 121 undergraduate students will receive their degrees.

With a speech titled “Success, Failure and Gratitude,” the graduates will be addressed by Elizabeth (Havens) Abraham, a member of the LEC Class of 1968.

Abraham is the majority owner, CEO and Treasurer of Top Tool Company, a precision metal stamping company located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Under her leadership, Top Tool Company was named the MetroNorth Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year in 2005.

Previously, Abraham headed the psychology department at London Memorial Hospital in Chicago and taught medical students and physicians at the Chicago Medical School. She also started a consulting service in Evanston, Illinois, served as a senior strategic planner at First Bank Minneapolis, a senior financial analyst at the Pillsbury Company and a marketing professor at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul and the Carlson School of Business in Minneapolis.

She received a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors from Lake Erie College in 1968 with a major in psychology, a Master of Arts degree in social experimental psychology from the University of North Dakota and a Master of Business Administration degree from the Carlson School at the University of Minnesota.

Abraham has been recognized as an industry leader by the Minneapolis/St. Paul business journal “Women in Business.” She is a founding member of the Women Leaders in Manufacturing Council, a board member of the Minnesota Manufacturing Coalition and a member of LifeScience Alley’s Advisory Committee for Manufacturing.

She was awarded the Distinguished Alumni award from Lake Erie College in 2012 and has been instrumental in the establishment of several endowed scholarships for LEC students. She has been a member of the Lake Erie College Board of Directors since 2012.

Abraham and her husband, Alden (Al), live in Minneapolis.

The 161st commencement ceremony at Lake Erie College marks the second time the undergraduate and graduate students will be separated, as the graduate ceremony is to take place Friday, May 5. The speaker for this ceremony will be Dr. Robert J. Trebar, dean of the School of Business and professor of business administration. This separation of ceremonies is indicative of the College’s growing class sizes and the graduation of the College’s second class of students in the Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies program.

Admission tickets are required for the Lake Erie College Commencement ceremonies. A free reception honoring the graduates will follow each ceremony in the Arthur S. Holden Center. For more information, contact
