LEC junior goes head-to-head with international competitors at U.S. Go Congress in San Diego

Fine Arts,

Earlier this month, Lake Erie College junior Soren Jaffe placed 2nd at the American Go Association’s (AGA) 33rd annual U.S. Go Congress tournament. The events took place August 5 - 12, 2017 in San Diego, Calif.

Jaffe was defeated in his first game but broke through with a subsequent 5-win streak. His vanquishing opponent eventually won first place in the “4 Dan” division. As undefeated champion of the “3 Dan” division at the AGA’s 32nd annual US Open in 2016, Jaffe had advanced to a higher rank.

“I did not do as well as I wanted to do. Of course, I wanted that first place, but second place is definitely acceptable,” he said.

Jaffe was formidable in the Evening League, a more casual nightly tournament lasting the entire week. Competitors were paired by strength in order to play a ranked game. With the best overall record (6-1) and most overall wins (6), Jaffe emerged as Evening League Champion and Evening League Hurricane.

Most recently, on the weekend of Aug. 26-27, Jaffe won two tournaments, scoring 4-1 in Mason, Ohio and 3-0 in Columbus, Ohio.

He plans to hold another Go tournament this year at LEC, where participants can learn how to play. Last spring, the one-day, four-round tournament run by Jaffe took place on Apr. 22 and welcomed competitors from the local community.
