Senior Michelle Petsche Lands Internship at Progressive InsuranceLake Erie College senior Michelle Petsche attended an open house last spring for the Accounting Rotation Program at Progressive Insurance. After several rounds of interviewing, she landed an internship in the pricing lines group for 12 weeks beginning in May 2014.
Petsche graduated from Chardon High School (CHS) after participating in the PSEO program, splitting her time between LEC and Lakeland Community College. She graduated top of her class with an associate's degree from Lakeland and valedictorian of CHS.
In Fall 2012, Petsche started at LEC as a Mathematics major, while also involved in the Accounting program. On campus, she works as a math tutor, co-membership chair of Mortar Board and secretary of the Accounting Club. Off campus, Petsche works in the Accounting department at Stafast Products in Painesville. She interned over the summer at the Stafast in accounts payable.
After attending the open house at Progressive last spring, she learned about the analyst internship opportunities and knew it was something she wanted to experience.
"This Fall, I applied for the analyst/actuarial internship online. From there I had to pass a job aptitude/quantitative skills test, then made it to the phone interview. I learned that I made it to the final round interview event," said Petsche.
The final round interview was a two-day event that began with a question and answer networking session. The next day, Petchse had three, hour-long interviews along with a tour and a question and answer session with past interns. About a week later, she was chosen for the internship.
"I would not have gotten this opportunity without the assistance of my professors. I consider them LEC's greatest asset. Accounting Professor Julie Ziemak went out of her way to help me get in contact with Progressive. She sent emails and helped me prepare for the interview. Professor Ziemak and Assistant Professor of Mathematics Dr. Tabrina Smith talked to me both evenings after the interviews and helped me tweak my resume," said Petsche.
Upon graduation, Petsche would like to continue her mathematical studies in graduate school in the hopes of taking the actuarial exams.
