Open auditions for Lake Erie College fall theatre production ‘Murder by Poe’

The Lake Erie College Department of Theatre will hold open auditions for its fall production of “Murder by Poe,” a terrifying Edgar Alan Poe mystery mashup by Jeffrey Hatcher.

Associate Professor of Theatre and Director Jerry Jaffe, PhD, invites members of the community to audition on Wednesday, August 22 and Thursday, August 23 between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Auditions will be held in the C.K. Rickel Theater in Royce Hall of the Fine and Performing Arts, located off Gillet Street on the Lake Erie College campus.

Callbacks will take place on August 24 at 6 p.m. or by appointment.

Those auditioning will be asked to participate in cold readings and improvisation. The ability to speak with a French accent is essential to many roles. “Murder by Poe” is dark and violent, and it will not be appropriate for children.

Roles

Leads:
The Woman—lost on a stormy night, comes upon the House of Usher
Dupin—French detective with a French accent
 
Main Ensemble:
Cat—murderer based the protagonist from “The Black Cat”
Heart—murderer based upon the protagonist from “The Telltale Heart”
Roderick Usher—man who owns the house, a tortured and sensitive soul
William Wilson—murderer
 
Characters with a French accent:
The Inspector—helps Dupin on a case
The Zoo Man—a suspect in a murder
The Queen—comes to Dupin for help
The Prefect—an aid to the Queen
The Minister—a poet who is blackmailing the Queen
The Accent Actor—a fun role, must do 5 different accents within 1 page of dialogue
 
Smaller roles:
An Old Man—murder victim
Cat's Wife—murder victim
"Pluto"—a person who plays the actual black cat
Policeman 1 & 2—involved in investigating Cat and Heart
Mrs. Clemm—housekeeper
 
Extras:
Tortured victims, dead men and women, police, guards, waiters and others

“As you can see, there are many parts and we would love to have you audition!” Dr. Jaffe said.

Eight performances of “Murder by Poe” will take place November 1-4 and 8-11 at 7:30 p.m., with the exception of Sunday performances, which will be at 2 p.m.
