Residence Director – Student Life Administrative Assistant (two openings)


Lake Erie College, a small, co-educational, four-year, independent liberal arts college located in Painesville, OH, 30 miles east of Cleveland, invites applications for the position of residence director – student life administrative assistant (RD). As a member of the Student Life staff, the RD is responsible for the general welfare of all students, encouraging them to maximize their intellectual growth and personal development. The RD is expected to positively influence, contribute to, and improve the quality of life of the residential student through programming, enforcing college policies and procedures, and by forming personal relationships with each student in his/her residential community.


Residence Director Responsibilities:

  • Assists in the management of a residential living community ranging from 120-250 residents, varying from residence hall living to apartment living.
  • Assists in the supervision of seven to nine paraprofessional resident assistant (RA) staff members.
  • Participates in 24 hour on-call responsibilities along with fellow AC/RDs (including break periods).
  • Attends weekly RA staff meetings.
  • Attends weekly staff meetings and weekly one-on-ones with respective AC. Submits weekly and on-call reports to the DSL.
  • Assists with planning and implementing community programs with RAs according to the Community Development area outlined in the RA position description (available on the Lake Erie College website).
  • Assists in the training, selection, and evaluation of RA staff.
  • Facilitates resident check-in and check-out process.
  • Provides crisis intervention, when needed, and makes appropriate referrals.
  • Intercedes regarding policy violations and makes appropriate referrals.
  • Provides sensitive, responsive, and well-informed guidance to residents regarding individual and collective concerns.
  • When needed, serves as conduct officer and facilitates roommate mediations.
  • Are visible and accessible to residents within assigned community.
  • Represents the Office of Student Life at College functions and events.
  • Other duties as assigned by the director of student life & housing and/or VP for student affairs.

Student Life Office Administrative Assistant:

  • Maintains 15-20 office hours per week within the Student Life Office.
  • Maintains a professional and positive lobby entrance.
  • Answers the main Student Life phone and takes messages when appropriate.
  • Distributes tickets for student events-following established guidelines.
  • Maintains multiple event sign-up sheets.
  • Designs, copies, and posts signs and flyers.
  • Checks Student Life mail box in College Hall.
  • Distributes ping pong and pool equipment.
  • Assists with confidential tasks.
  • Assists with mailings, information tracking, or other projects, as requested.
  • Ability to run campus errands, as needed.
  • Assists in the occasional after-hours program as requested by the assistant director of student life.
  • Light lifting (periodically).
  • Other duties as assigned by the assistant director of student life, director of student life & housing and/or VP for student affairs.


  • High school diploma required (bachelor’s degree or currently enrolled in an undergraduate/graduate degree seeking program preferred).
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and insurable driving record.
  • Strong communication, computer and organizational skills; solution oriented
  • Conflict mediation knowledge.
  • Enthusiasm and willingness to develop, initiate, and actively participate in developmental student programming.
  • Ability to work within a residence life team.
  • Able to work with a diverse student population.
  • Sound administrative and supervisory skills.
  • Sense of humor.
