Dawn Powell Prize in Creative Writing

All creative writers, poets and storytellers are invited to submit their original poetry or short fiction. Over $350 in prizes will be awarded and the winners and runners-up in each category will be honored. Winners will be announced at the event on April 19th at the Lincoln Library at 4:30 p.m.

Guidelines:

  • Submissions due: April 7th at midnight

  • May submit up to two works in either Poetry or Short Fiction

  • Must be recent original works of the author

  • Submissions should be emailed as a PDF or Word document to WRITINGCONTEST@LEC.EDU

  • Include your full name and email when submitting (not on the work itself)

  • Winners will be notified before the ceremony

  • LEC Students, Staff, Faculty and Alumni may participate in the contest

About Dawn Powell: The award’s namesake, author Dawn Powell, attended Lake Erie College from 1914-1918 and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. During her time at LEC, Powell edited and wrote for the College’s literary publication and was active in theater. By the time of her death in 1965, she had written 16 novels, nine plays and numerous short stories.

Prizes: Over $350 in prizes will be awarded and the winners and runners-up in each category will be recognized. SUBMIT YOUR WORK TO WRITINGCONTEST@LEC.EDU BY APRIL 7TH AT MIDNIGHT.

Two awards will be given, the first in Excellence in First Year Writing and the second for Excellence in Writing in the CORE. The first award recognizes the best paper written each academic year by a student in EN 101: Principles of Composition and Research and the second award recognizes the best paper written each academic year by a student in one of LEC’s CORE classes.

Named for Professor Kate Carter, who was a creative writer, a poet, an artist and a much loved and long serving adjunct professor in the Lake Erie College Department of English, these awards honor Professor Carter’s legacy of academic rigor, student engagement, thoughtful mentoring and commitment to excellent writing.

About Kate Carter: Kate Carter was an award-winning poet and recipient of an Ohio Arts Council Fellowship in Poetry. She received her MA in Creative Writing from Antioch University McGregor and taught in the Psychology department at Antioch University New England and the English and Women’s Studies departments at New Mexico State University. She is the author of two chapbooks of poetry, Covenant and Lodestar: Night Sky. Prizes: $100 for each award
