Summer field biology workshops for educators to be taught at Grand River Conservation Campus

Academics,

In collaboration with The Nature Conservancy, Lake Erie College is offering two summer field biology workshops onsite at Morgan Swamp, located in the Grand River Conservation Campus.

Elementary and secondary teachers may receive professional development credit from LEC for taking “Get Your Hands Dirty,” a series of two grade-specific courses co-taught by Associate Professor of Adolescent/Young Adult Education Linda Siegel and Assistant Professor of Adolescent/Young Adult Science Al Fazenbaker.

Professors Siegel and Fazenbaker will be joined by LEC professional development instructors and wildlife biologists Paul Pira and Steven Siegel, along with staff from The Nature Conservancy.

“Professional development courses with this unique synergistic quality (K-12 teachers, collegiate science faculty and an environmentally focused conservation organization) are rare and not to be missed,” said Lisa Strausbaugh, director of the Center for Leadership and Professional Development at LEC.

The first workshop, taking place Monday and Tuesday, June 18-19 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., offers field biology education to elementary teachers on-site at the Morgan Swamp in Rock Creek, Ohio.

The following week, Wednesday and Thursday, June 27-28 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., a similar workshop will be held for secondary teachers.

The theme-based workshops will take place outdoors and in-classroom and will address state and national curriculum standards for educators. Instructors promise to impart locally relevant and authentic lessons that promote environmental literacy amongst students.

“The Center for Leadership and Professional Development is excited about this innovative approach to incorporating learning and higher level thinking skills in science being offered in collaborative nature with the Nature Conservancy and Lake Erie College,” said Strausbaugh.

Teachers will leave with ideas for lesson plans and hands-on activities to meet students’ needs. They may register for either course here.
