Rabbit Run Theater in Madison, Ohio, and Lake Erie College open the 2016-17 Studio Series: Extraordinary Circumstances season with the comedy “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike."

Written by Christopher Durang and winner of the 2013 Tony Award for Best Play, “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” opens Friday, Oct. 14, and runs through Sunday, Oct. 23.

Middle-aged siblings Vanya and Sonia share a home in Bucks County, PA, where they bemoan their comfortable, but lackluster lot in life.   Their almost-over-the-hill, movie-star sister, Masha, arrives unannounced with her much-younger boyfriend, Spike. Old resentments flare up when Masha threatens to sell the house out from under them.  But all is not lost in this comedy, equal parts Chekhov and off-beat humor.

Cast members include Christopher Ashmun as Vanya and Vonnie Pilarczyk as Vanya’s sister, Sonia.  Masha is portrayed by Dawn Hill; and Spike is played by Matt Mortensen.  Rounding out the cast are Evie Koh as Cassandra and Mary Hudson as Nina.

“Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” is directed by Ann Hedger, programming coordinator at The Fine Arts Association.  Hedger has been associated with Rabbit Run since the 1980s as both an actor and director.

“Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” runs Oct. 14, 15, 20, 21, 22 at 7:30 p.m. and Oct. 16 and 23 at 2:00 p.m. in the C.K. Rickel Theatre in Royce Hall for the Fine and Performing Arts off of Gillett St. on the Lake Erie College campus, 391 W. Washington St., Painesville, OH.

Tickets for all performances are available on line at www.rabbitrunonline.org or at the door.  Tickets are $15/adult and $13/senior.  All students are admitted free of charge as well as Lake Erie College faculty and staff.  All seats are general seating.  Parking is free.

A pre-show event is available on Friday, Oct. 21, at the Steele Mansion in Painesville. Patrons may enjoy heavy hors d’oeuvres and a self-guided tour through the mansion. The Steele Mansion is located at 348 Mentor Ave., across from Lake Erie College. Tickets are $27 for adults and $25 for seniors (includes show ticket).  Cash bar is available.  Reservations may be made at rabbitrunonline.org.

“Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” is made possible in part by funding through the National Endowment for the Arts, the Lake County Visitors Bureau Arts and Culture Fund, the Ohio Arts Council and ideastream.
