On Friday, May 6, Lake Erie College will celebrate an exclusively graduate level commencement ceremony. The event will take place at 7:00 p.m. in the Helen Rockwell Morley Memorial Music Building, where 62 graduate students will receive their degrees.
The graduates will be addressed by Amitabh Goel, M.D., FACS, the Chief Medical Officer, Chairperson of Surgery and Director of Critical Care at UH-Geneva Medical Center, a critical access hospital that is part of University Hospitals. Dr. Goel is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and an advanced trauma life support instructor for Lake Erie College.
Dr. Goel received his medical degree at the Queen’s University of Belfast in the United Kingdom where he was awarded the Allison Postgraduate Clinical Prize for outstanding clinical merit and services to the medical school. He completed his general surgery residency at the West Penn/Allegheny Health System in Pittsburgh where he was voted the most outstanding surgical trainee and won the Crystal Apple award, the Burn Surgeon award and the Dunkire award for outstanding performance, excellence and scholarship achievement in surgery. He then completed a surgical critical care fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
Dr. Goel is a clinical professor of surgery at Case Western Reserve University and was awarded the 2016 Tom Mettee Foundations of Clinical Medicine award for exceptional contributions in teaching and mentoring medical students. He is a member of the Society for American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, the Society of Critical Care Medicine and the American Hernia Society.
Dr. Goel has been active in bringing quality surgical and critical care to rural and underserved populations and was recognized in 2015 by the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health. His interests include teaching by conventional and distance learning methods, clinical informatics and health care delivery processes.
