Lake Erie College Equine Studies Students Expand Their| Horizons Abroad

Four students from the Lake Erie College School of Equine Studies spent their summer abroad gaining hands-on experience with internationally recognized horse trainers in the Netherlands, returning home with advanced skills, global perspectives, and unforgettable memories.

Juniors Sophie Miller and Emily Lowenguth interned at Stal Steeghs in Meterik, Netherlands, under the guidance of renowned trainer John Steeghs. Lake Erie College has partnered with Steeghs for over 12 years, offering accomplished riders the opportunity to learn about international sporthorse training, breeding, and sales.

“I learned a lot while I was in Europe, not just about riding and training young horses, but also the business aspect on how to run an international sales/show barn,” said Miller. “It also helped me grow as a rider by learning how to adapt to different types of horses, helped me build connections that may open doors for future opportunities, and I was surrounded by top riders that I learned from every day. I was very thankful to work under two amazing people who helped me help build my confidence both on and off the horse. This is by far the best experience I have had.”

Seniors Samantha Pierce and Gloria Wahl completed their internships at Johnson Horses in Ysselsteyn, Netherlands, working with Desiree Johnson at one of Europe’s premier hunter and jumper sales facilities. Johnson Horses exports elite horses to clients worldwide, and the students were immersed in every aspect of the operation, from riding and young horse management to assisting with sales.

“While it was challenging at times, I quickly learned the importance of hard work and perseverance and how they are both essential in the horse world,” said Pierce. “As a result, I was able to experience so many unique opportunities and make several life-long connections. Overall, it was an incredible experience and I wouldn’t trade it for anything!”

During their internships, all four students attended world-class horse shows in the Netherlands and Germany, enhancing their riding expertise, and deepened their understanding of the global equine industry. On their days off, they explored Europe, further expanding their cultural knowledge and becoming true global citizens.

“These international internships are invaluable,” said Equine Studies Director of Riding, Mary Pardee. “Our students have the opportunity to hone their riding skills under the mentorship of internationally recognized trainers and make lasting professional connections that will serve them throughout their careers.”

Lake Erie College expresses deep gratitude to Stal Steeghs, Johnson Horses, and other partners who continue to mentor and support the next generation of highly trained equestrians.
