Navigating Change: Managing Transition Stress & Anxiety

A new semester brings new opportunities, new experiences, and new challenges. Whether you're a first-year student adjusting to college life, returning after a break, balancing academics and athletics, or simply navigating a new routine, it's normal to feel stressed or overwhelmed at times.  The good news? Stress is a common response to change, and there are healthy ways to manage it. Small steps can make a big difference.

Quick Ways to Manage Transition Stress

  • Keep a RoutineCreate a daily schedule for classes, meals, studying, and sleep. Having structure can help reduce stress and uncertainty.

  • Take Things One Step at a TimeFocus on one task at a time instead of everything on your to-do list. Progress happens one step at a time.

    • Pause and Reset

Take a walk, spend a few minutes outside, journal, or try this grounding exercise:

      • 5 things you can see

      • 5 things you can hear

      • 5 things you can feel

    • Prioritize Sleep

Consistent sleep helps improve concentration, mood, and stress management.

    • Stay Connected

Reach out to friends, family, professors, coaches, or campus resources when you need support.

Remember:

Feeling stressed during times of transition doesn't mean you're failing. It means you're adjusting, learning, and growing.

Need an Additional Resource? The National Institute of Mental Health’s “I’m So Stressed Out!" fact sheet offers practical tips for managing stress and anxiety. While not specific to college transitions, it contains helpful coping strategies and wellness tools.
