4+1 Programs

Undergraduate students at Lake Erie College who meet eligibility requirements may enroll in graduate-level courses that count as electives toward their bachelor’s degree while also fulfilling requirements for a graduate program.
This pathway allows students to earn both an undergraduate and a graduate degree in just five years.

About Dr. Curtis

Dr. Amanda Curtis earned her Ph.D. in Health and Sport Studies from the University of Iowa in 2013. She also holds an M.S. Ed in Sports Science & Wellness Education from the University of Akron and a B.A. from Albion College in Physical Education and English. Dr. Curtis’s primary areas of interest involve issues of gender and physicality within the fields of sport history and sport sociology as well as representations of female athletes and physicality in the media. She also presents original research in these areas at various national and international academic conferences. She teaches courses within the Sport Studies curriculum such as: Gender, Sexuality and Sport; History of Sport in America; Sports in Education; Sport Sociology; Sport, Nationalism and Culture; and Sport Communication, among others. Dr. Curtis was recognized for her efforts in the classroom with the Ohio Magazine Excellence in Education award as well as the LEC Tibby for Faculty member of the year.

About Dr. Rothwell

Greg Rothwell is currently the Program Director of Education & Professional Studies. Previously, he has served as assistant and head principal of Follansbee Middle School and Brooke High School, in Brooke County, West Virginia. Before his career in administrative positions, Greg taught history at Brooke High School. During his tenure at Brooke High School, Greg served on numerous committees including groups focusing on curriculum and technology, establishing many Advanced Placement courses, and academic-based competition teams.

Also, Greg has served in many leadership roles, including the Brooke High School faculty senate chair, social studies department chair, member of the school leadership team, local school improvement council, and a regional advisory committee for professional development. As a leader, Greg has established an emphasis on STEM education at the district level, working with curriculum directors and faculty. After receiving grant money, Greg and his team traveled throughout the country to learn about STEM-related educational techniques and technologies. Greg earned his Ph.D. from Robert Morris University in Moon Township, Pennsylvania, studying Instructional Management and Leadership. His dissertation title is "An Updated Look at Adopters and Non-Adopters of Educational Technology Among Teachers in a Rural Setting". He has also earned an M.A in Teaching and Learning with Technology from Ashford University (IA), an M.A in Educational Leadership from Wheeling Jesuit University (WV), and a B.A. in Secondary Education with an emphasis on social studies from West Liberty University (WV).

STREAMS at Lake Erie College offers diverse academic pathways in the sciences, mathematics, and equine studies. Students may pursue a traditional science curriculum or specialize in one of our equine-focused or health-related programs.

Our programs blend scientific inquiry, hands-on research, industry experience, and personalized faculty mentorship—equipping graduates to excel in careers ranging from laboratory science to veterinary medicine, equine management, and human performance.

Gain real-world experience through immersive, hands-on learning across scientific, mathematical, and equine fields:

Equine Studies at the George M. Humphrey Equestrian Center
Students in equine programs train at our nationally recognized equestrian facility, gaining professional-level experience in horse care, facility operations, and equine training. Practical learning is integrated into daily coursework, preparing students for careers in management, instruction, therapy, and veterinary support.

Therapeutic Horsemanship

Students have the opportunity to work directly in a PATH, International Premier Center under certified instructors to develop skills in adaptive instruction, rider support, and equine-assisted services. Graduates are prepared for certification or administration in a rapidly growing area of the equine industry. Students also earn community service and invaluable experience as volunteers in our in-house therapeutic program.

Undergraduate Research & Laboratory Experience

Pre-Veterinary Pathway

About Dr. Tedesco

If you’ve ever taken a large lecture class, you know that it’s not the most conducive environment for interactive learning. For Dr. Johnathan Tedesco, this lack of personal connection was one of the reasons he chose to teach at Lake Erie College. The child of a pharmaceutical professional, Tedesco moved frequently growing up before eventually settling in Ashland, Ohio. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Ashland University in 2002, then went on to complete his Ph.D. in chemistry at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland in 2008. That same year, he began his collegiate teaching career at Case Western, where he spent two years before joining the faculty at Lake Erie College. Drawn to the smaller, liberal arts environment, he saw the opportunity to make a more meaningful impact on his students’ academic journeys.

At Lake Erie College, Dr. Tedesco enjoys the ability to work closely with students and witness their growth from their first year through graduation. He finds fulfillment in seeing them reach their goals and move on to successful careers or graduate studies. He believes the college’s collaborative environment allows students to take an active role in shaping their own experiences and appreciates being part of that process. His advice to prospective students is to take advantage of the supportive atmosphere and dedicated faculty that make LEC unique. When he’s not in the lab or classroom, Tedesco can often be found in his favorite spot on campus—Austin Hall—where he says the chemistry department has the most fun.

About Laura Stockhaus

Laura Stockhaus has been a member of the Lake Erie College faculty since 2013. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Equine Facility Management from Otterbein University and an MBA from Lake Erie College. Her work reflects a strong commitment to experiential learning and the integration of academic instruction with hands-on equine industry practice.

Professor Stockhaus brings extensive professional experience in equine facility management, horse training, and riding instruction across a variety of organizations in Northeast Ohio. She previously served as the Equestrian Director at Andrews Osborne Academy, where she managed facility operations, coached two Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) teams, organized nationally rated horse shows, and developed and implemented equine studies curricula at the middle and high school levels. She also served as Equestrian Director of Red Oak Camp, a long-standing nonprofit organization that played an influential role in shaping her approach to equine education.

At Lake Erie College, Professor Stockhaus teaches Equine Business and Equine Nutrition, as well as select riding and training courses. She also oversees the College’s public horse shows and equestrian events, providing students with meaningful, real-world learning opportunities that support professional development within the equine industry.

About Dr. Miller

Dr. Jenn Miller is the Executive Director of the Learning Commons and has more than 20 years of experience in education. Currently completing her Doctorate in Education (EdD) in Educational Technology at Walden University, she specializes in instructional design, digital literacy, and online learning.

Dr. Miller holds a Master of Education in Literacy and Library Media Science and a Bachelor’s in Political Science from Quincy University. Her expertise spans academic support, library media, and the integration of technology in education. She is passionate about enhancing learning experiences through digital tools, fostering communication, and promoting effective online learning strategies.
