Lake Erie College Junior Invited to Doctors in Italy Fellowship Program

Lake Erie College junior Haley Gurich has been accepted into the Doctors in Italy program for a two-week Fellowship program in Milan in June, 2022. This fellowship is through Doctors in Italy, who provide opportunities for students to learn about healthcare and the daily life of medical professionals in Italy.

“I decided to apply due to my love for healthcare and a great opportunity this was,” Gurich explained. “I am planning on applying for my Masters of Science in Physician Assistant Studies, so this will be a great opportunity for me.”

The application process involved submitting an application of interest, and Gurich’s was strengthened by healthcare experience, shadowing hours and a good academic standing. Once the program expressed interest in her, she had an interview and a chance to explain how the fellowship would benefit her career and why she is pursuing a career in healthcare.

During the fellowship Gurich will get one-on-one experience with English speaking doctors and patients in approximately five different areas of medicine, resulting in about 40 hours of shadowing. Working abroad will provide opportunities to learn about medicine in an international perspective, giving her a better understanding of medicine globally.

"We are proud of Haley and her commitment to becoming an outstanding healthcare provider." said Dr. Johnathan Tedesco, Dean of the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. "While we set a high bar and always expect great things from our students, we love to celebrate their achievements with them.”

Gurich is currently a junior at Lake Erie college, but will be taking an extra year and graduating in the spring of 2024 with a major in biology and minor in chemistry. She works as an in-home health aide as well as a Pharmacy Technician at CVS. She also volunteers at the Red Cross.

“I am most looking forward to being able to involve myself in medicine in a different part of the world. I am excited to see the different cases in the hospital and the doctors I get to spend time with,” Gurich said. “I have never been out of the country before, so this is a completely new experience for me!”

Doctors in Italy is a purpose-driven healthtech company launched with Bocconi University. Their mission is to internationalize medicine through technology and education. It was founded with the purpose of sharing knowledge of culturally competent doctors with students from all over the world, who are on a path to become members of a global community of medical professionals. This aligns well with Lake Erie College’s mission to create global citizens of their students.
